Madison River - Between Quake Lake and Ennis, Montana Fly Fishing Reports & Conditions
My tips of the week
Baetis are hatching mid afternoon so start fishing a soft hackle pheasant tail about 11 prior to the hatch. Try raising the soft hackle in the water column to imitate a rising may fly. Don't be afraid to throw some meat on the banks. Water conditions change quickly this time of year call the shop in Ennis for up to the second report 800-808-2832

Madison River, Between Quake Lake and Ennis Description

The Upper Madison is know as the "Fifty Mile Rifle". It has some of the most classic trout water in the country and many anglers from all over the country have called it their favorite for years. With lots of Rainbow and Brown Trout and good fishing with nymphs, dries, and streamers, the Madison is a near perfect trout stream.

Techniques & Tips

Nyphing is still king if you want to stay bent. Try a stone fly nymph lead fly with either a pheasant tail or a purple P Taill trailer. A worm is always a good bet this time of year, trail one off your stone fly or PT and it will pick up fish. There is a good hatch of BWO each afternoon and if you get a day where it is non windy and cloudy look for rising fish. Most of the rising fish we have been seeing have been in back eddies and side channels. Try swimming a sculpin on the banks either under an indicator or tight lined

7-Day Forecast

Will be cloudy and chilly for the rest of the week and will get warmer heading into the weekend. Fish have had a few days to adjust to the changing conditions and they are on the feed. Fishing should remain excellent throughout the week.
