St. Joseph River Description

The St. Joseph is probably the heaviest stocked steelhead river in the world! With a five hydro dam fish ladder system, it carries steelhead, coho salmon and browns for 48 miles to South Bend, Indiana.
Close to 400,000 summer skamania steelhead, which run the river from June through September and 200,000 winter Michigan strain steelhead are stocked. Not to mention 400,000 coho silver salmon- it is a salmonid ...

Techniques & Tips

Fresh fall steelhead continue to move thru the system with rainfall and mild weather...Coho spawning and steelhead in border area excellent Fishing very good in South Bend with lots of movement thru ladders...fresh coho and some steelhead coming through the ladders at a good clip-THESE NEXT THREE WEEKS WILL SEE IT ALL COME TOGETHER!- summer steels and coho's ....Finally a good push of fresh summer steelhead!...coho salmon are already in!!... Full moon, lake turning over in a few days on wind direction...this will be the start of the Skamania run which keeps threatening!!! - late because of cold temps...Despite the 1/2 rain, WATER COMING DOWN- warming up- the first major run of fish is days away!- but a few Skamania are already in the river near Berrien....moving thru ladder- when water drops will be epic!!!tons of rain!!!!...water discolored- lake temps 48-50....fresh Skamania steelhead coming into Berrien Springs and at Paw Paw...ICE JUST STARTED BREAKING NEAR MOUTH OF RIVER TODAY!!!!!!LOTS OF ICE AND FROZEN OVER!...another cold sanp---BUT WARM UP AGAIN...been slow fall- hope spring is better..Still a few steelhead and...lake -run browns ..BUT!!!!!EVERYTHING IS RUNNING LATE THIS YEAR BECAUSE OF THE COLD LAKE ICE OVER CONDITIONS ...use 11/12 or 14 foot spey rods with Skagit shooting heads -over head casting like east coast salt for pier fishing...;large orange/chartreuse and black intruders....also baitfish intruders...patterns in "Selectivity" book and "Steelhead Dreams" my blog says it all www.graydrake.com Facebook- Matt Supinski/Selectivity TSS PAGES http://graydrakelodgeandoutfitters.blogspot.com/2013/07/summer-steelheadcaddis-poppingcold.html http://vimeo.com/72902000
