Flowing south through Bath County the Upper Jackson meanders its way through the George Washington National Forest to its formation of Lake Moomaw by the Gathright Dam. This freestone river offers many fly fishing opportunities within its spring filled waters. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries stock three sections of the upper Jackson six times each annually. There are two put and take sections ...
as well as a special regulation fly fishing only section above Hidden Valley. The scenery is breathtaking. Deep pools, long riffles, and numerous eddies offer many possibilities for fly anglers of all abilities. The freshwater invertebrates are numerous and hatches are prolific thankful in part to the many springs that empty into the river.
Although the put and take sections can be relatively crowded on the weekends; the special regulation section sees less pressure. This is due to the 2 mile hike/bike needed to reach this majestic section of river. The special regulation section is a fly fish only section with a 2 fish over 16 inches slot limit imposed. Thanks to conservation efforts by fly enthusiasts, most of these larger fish are returned to grow even larger. Do not pass up the opportunity to fish along the put and take section in Hidden Valley on the way to this special regulation section.
Swinging soft hackle for trout and smaller wooly buggers. This is a good place to practice new techniques. Nynphing under an indicator will be a good idea.
