Line slickness is important for many reasons. First, the more efficiently a fly line runs through the guides, the further the line shoots, the result of reduced friction on rod guide surfaces. Second, most modern rods perform at their maximum with 20 to 40 feet of line beyond the tip. The easier it is to get line out beyond your rod tip, the faster your rod will respond to the weight of the line, loading efficiently for maximum power. Third, because getting a slick line where you want it to go takes less effort and requires less false casting, you'll fatigue less and won't over-stress your casting stroke to gain distance.
