Diabetic Alert Dogs Save Lives

I’m at the Wildrose Seminars at Orvis Sandanona, which are put on by Orvis-Endorsed trainer and breeder Mike Stewart. I’m here because Mike and I are writing his signature training book, which will be published by Orvis Rizzoli in the fall of 2012. The interesting part of writing this book is that I’m also training Murphy, a Wildrose Lab, at the same time I’m writing the book. Many of you have been following. . .

Caught on Tape: Runaway Pomeranian Causes Massive Traffic Jam in Portland

Written by: Phil Monahan

Mango, the runaway Pomeranian, safe with her mom.

A pomeranian named Mango gave her owners their fifteen minutes of fame on Good Morning America after causing minutes of pain for Portland-area commuters while she ran back and  across the freeway and dodged her pursuers for a good 15 minutes. It was all caught on tape.

After 15 minutes, Mango finally gave his would-be rescuers a break by running up an on-ramp and into a neighborhood.

By then, the chase had drawn the attention of news photographers and even a TV helicopter crew, when a KATU videojournalist spotted the dog and called animal control.

Dowdy explained to officers that Mango serves as a companion dog for his wife, Linda, who suffered a stroke two years ago. He had brought the dog with him that afternoon to pick up his wife from first day of school at Portland’s Mount Hood Community College.

Animal control officers realized Mango would only stop for Linda. Once she showed up, Mango ran into her arms and the chase was over.

Read the rest of the story and see the video of Mango’s big chase scene here.

Check out the great video above, featuring scenes from both events, which shows a spectacular board-switching ride by Abbie G., who set a Guinness World Record for longest ride by a dog!

Video of the Day: Dogs Making a Difference

Doggies Making A Difference from HealthyState.org on Vimeo.

Here’s a great video from HealthyState.org about the good works that dogs do in hospitals, especially with children. It focuses on Charlie, a four-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, who is part of the Therapy Dog program at Tampa’s St. Joseph Hospital. The same calming affects that dogs have on patients living in a sometimes stressful environment is one reason they make us feel better at home, as well.

The journey from movie star to has-been can be precipitous. (Just ask Cory Feldman.)  Now Berry, the German shepherd who starred as Padfoot–the animal form of Gary Oldman’s character, Sirius Black–in Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban is homeless. His former owner, stuntman Paul Thompson, recently turned Berry and his pal Porridge over to the UK German Shepherd Dog Rescue,  an organization “dedicated to the rescue, short term fostering and long-term re-homing of German Shepherd Dogs.” According to news reports, Thompson found himself traveling too much for work and unable to care for the two dogs, who were raised together from puppyhood. For more information, visit Berry’s page one the GSDR site.

Goldzilla 2011 from DevonTT on Vimeo.

What’s big, hairy, and very, very friendly? A golden retriever! That is, according to the hosts of the annual Goldzilla: the Golden Retriever Fun Fair and Walk for Rescue, an annual event held in Shoreview, Minnesota. All proceeds benefit Retrieve a Golden of Minnesota (RAGOM), a Golden Retriever rescue organization serving Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, and South Dakota. This year, more than 300 goldens–along with their owners–showed up. There were plenty of other breeds represented as well. Check out this great footage from a worthwhile and fun event!
