Consider for a moment what the annual budget for your local dog shelter might be. Then try to wrap your brain around the fact that a Chinese property developer spent 12 million yuan (about US$2 million) on a single Tibetan Mastiff at a recent “luxury pet” fair. (This new price beats the old record of $1.6 million, which we posted about back in 2012.) The buyer offered this ridiculous explanation:

His dogs “have lion’s blood and are top-of-the-range mastiff studs. Pure Tibetan mastiffs are very rare, just like our nationally treasured pandas, so the prices are so high.”

Just think of how that money could have been put to use helping dogs in other ways.
