Video: New App Uses Facial Recognition to Reunite Dog Owners and Lost Pets

A dog lover’s idea for a way to help folks locate thier lost pets has become a reality with a new app called Finding Rover. John Polimeno believed that facial-recognition software was the key to connecting dogs and owners, but there were plenty of naysayers who said it wouldn’t work when he proposed the idea. But he didn’t give up. Finally, a team of researchers at the University of Utah agreed to take on the project. The result is an app that he says has 98 percent accuracy.

Here’s how it works: If you find a lost dog, you use the app to take its picture. The app will search its database to see if there’s a match. Here’s a video report that walks you through the process:

So far, some 20,000 people have signed up, and the more who do so, the better your chances that the photo will match something in the database. Best of all, Finding Rover is free!
