Groundbreaking: Badly Burned Dog is First to Get Surgical Pigskin Graft

A Chihuahua mix who was stolen from her Milwaukee home and who then turned up eleven days later with burns all over her body has received groundbreaking treatment previously used only on humans. Little Beatrice was burned over 90 percent of her body, leaving her in need of desperate—and expensive—medical care. A local veterinarian, Dr. Marla Lichtenberger, and a surgeon from Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital, Dr John Weigelt, donated their time and expertise to try the experimental procedure:

The hourlong surgery performed Monday involved putting pigskin over the dog’s burns to let them heal. It will eventually come off.

This story starts with a double tragedy, Beatrice’s theft and horrible abuse, but it’s now looking as if it may have a happy ending, thanks to the kindness of strangers.
