Wow. This is a really beautiful series of photographs of a beloved dog’s final day. A Black Lab who had been diagnosed with osteosarcoma a few years ago, Duke had already lost a leg and was increasingly uncomfortable. So the Robertson family decided that it was time to let him go. The also decided to make his last day on Earth a wonderful one, full of laughter and love, and they invited photographer Robyn Arouty to document it:

“It was beautiful, really. One thing just fell into the next,” Arouty explained in an email to The Huffington Post. “[The day] started with the hamburgers, then the boys came over, then other friends, etc. The splash park was spontaneous. And then Duke walked under ‘The Rainbow Bridge,’ which is ironically also a term used for the place where pets go when they die. I felt honored.”

Ultimately, of course, this is a terribly sad story, but Arouty’s images are celebratory. It seems that Duke got the best send-off a dog could ever want.
