A fun article in the Daily Mail tells the story of a dog who has gone down in history as a murderer and a jailbird, even though he was neither. Pep was a black Labrador Retriever who was given as a gift to Pennsylvania governor Gifford Pinchot in 1923. But the very next year, the dog was sent to spend the rest of his life at Eastern State Penitentiary.

One intrepid and imaginative newspaper reporter took some poetic license and concocted a tale of canine treachery that was so popular that it was often reprinted, along with the wonderful mugshot above. Soon, the fake story became a well known “truth.”

I won’t ruin the true story for you, because it’s a fun read.
