Friday Film Festival 08.10.12

Written by: Phil Monahan

Welcome to another edition of the OrvisNews.com Friday Film Festival, in which we scour the Web for the best fly-fishing footage available. This week’s collection starts off with some of the best, most exciting and gorgeous footage we’ve seen in awhile. As usual, trout rule the day, with great videos from Sweden, Alaska, France, and the American West. There’s also plenty of warmwater and saltwater stuff, including ridiculous tarpon action from Florida and Mexico. Remember, we surf so you don’t have to. But if you do stumble upon something great that you think is worthy of inclusion in a future FFF, please post it in the comments below. See you next week with a fresh set of films!

GEOFISH Trailer from MOTIV FISHING on Vimeo.

We kick things off with a new, killer trailer for the upcoming film “Geofish.” There is an astonishing amount of action, local color, and humor packed into 4-1/2 minutes. Can’t wait to see the finished product, which is due this fall.

Alaska fish – HD 720p from Scott Hepler on Vimeo.

Some of my most lasting angling memories are from my three summers guiding in the Last Frontier, and this video does a great job of capturing the experience of fishing in the bush. From salmon to trout to large, hairy carnivores, it’s exciting stuff.

can you see from Outside Bend Productions on Vimeo.

The Deschutes is known for its spectacular caddisfly hatches, which are on display here. The colors of the stunning redband rainbows stand out particularly well against the stark desert landscape.

The carp on the mighty Columbia are tough enough to break Dacron backing, leading one of these anglers to chase his fly line. And who knew that biglips likes the Pink Dirt Snake?

Варзуга2012 from Mike Severyanin on Vimeo.

Russia’s Kola Peninsula is a Mecca for Atlantic salmon fishermen, and this video captures the landscape, local architecture, and stunning salmonids of the Varzuga River.

Brothers In Fly: Expanding Horizons Trailer 1. (ft. Salmon Gathering 2012) from Ben Hohnke on Vimeo.

From the Land Down Under comes this multi-species extravaganza. These guys catch all manner of cold-, warm-, and saltwater species—several of which I don’t recognize at all. Apparently, there’s an upcoming film fleshing out all these adventures.

JUST BROWNS from chroniclesofcod on Vimeo.

The title of this one says it all. If you like brown trout, these Bow River beauties oughta fill you with unmixed delight. That fish at about 1:20 is a serious pig.

2012 Poon Season: The Eats from Ganesh Chatani on Vimeo.

This video is long, but it features nothing but tarpon action: jumps, eats, and closeups of these beautiful fish. As it says at the end: “Love the Poon.”

Slimy Fly from M@m on Vimeo.

More carp goodness, this time from France. We start with some snubs, but once the hookups occur, we go to some 70s-era split-screen views accompanied by a Devo soundtrack. Bon temps.

What this one lacks in an imaginative title, it makes up for with some great images from Colorado’s Roaring Fork and Fryingpan Rivers. Silent James has a fine eye for detail.

emans giganter trailer from Fly Fishing Films on Vimeo.

When I first watched this video, I assumed that the fish they were catching were Atlantic salmon, but on closer inspection I realized that they are humongous brown trout. Shot on the River Em in Sweden, known for some of the largest sea trout in Europe, this one is the stuff of dreams.

Belize to the bone from Ben Bruhmuller on Vimeo.

Bonefishing in Belize is an aesthetic experience in this video, which focuses on the beautiful shots, rather than on fish. But don’t worry, there’s a fine ghost of the flats at the end.

This one is included just for the music. I’m pretty sure it’s filmed in France and features some pretty trout. But it’s the song that will get stuck in your head, perhaps forever.

We finish with a short film about a Texas fishery that’s not going to end up in any magazines, but the anglers who love it treasure the fish they catch there. Have a great weekend!
