The Friday Hot List is Back! The Orvis Fishing Reports and Conditions pages offer up-to-date reports, including stream and river flows, tides, recommended flies and equipment, and special fishing tips. At any given time, those waters that offer the very best fishing become part of the “Red Hot” list. To ensure that those making the reports aren’t exaggerating the quality of their local fishing, each reporter is allowed only four red hots per year per location, so they only rank their spot red hot when it’s truly outstanding. Every Friday, we’ll highlight those waters that offer the best fishing for the weekend.
“Fishing the last week has been excellent on the Eagle. Good blue-wing olive hatches in the late morning. Good streamer action, as well,” says John Packer of Fly Fishing Outfitters. “March until run-off in mid May is some of the best fishing of the year!” However, the folks at FFO ask that you make sure you respect spawning beds wherever you see them to ensure healthy trout reproduction.
“Little black and olive stoneflies are doing their downstream biological drifts along the shoreline,” says Matt Supinski, of Gray Drake Lodge & Outfitters. “Some days, you can see hundreds of them wiggling towards the surface. The trout and steelhead have started to gorge on them!”
“The entire river is fishing well, but is more consistent above Victor,” say the folks at Blackfoot River Outfitters. “Dry-fly fishing is on right now: Skwala Stones, Needle Flies (Leuctridae), Capnia (black snow stones), March brown Mayfly, and midges.”
