Here’s a bunch of tips from the newest chapter—”Offshore/Near-Shore Fly Fishing“—on the Orvis Fly Fishing Learning Center. Fighting big fish in the salt is a lot different from fighting trout or warmwater fish, so it’s worth your time to learn the basics before you leave the dock. Your three main concerns are: 1. tiring the fish quickly; 2. protecting your fly rod; and 3. controlling slack—avoiding slack most of the time, but adding it when a fish jumps. Master these skills, and you’ll have your fish boatside, ready for a quick photo and a clean release.
