Friday Film Festival 06.15.12

Written by: Phil Monahan

Welcome to another edition of the OrvisNews.com Friday Film Festival, in which we scour the Web for the best fly-fishing footage available. This week’s collection bounces around the globe, covering all the continents, except for Antarctica. (If anyone knows of a fly-fishing video from Antarctica, please let me know.) There’s a good amount of saltwater action, with plenty of airborne tarpon, as well as some pretty sketchy dead-of-night urban action from the Land of the Rising Sun. Trout lovers will find everything from high-country streams to sweeping Chilean vistas to feed the urge. And, of course, there are carp. Aren’t there always?

Remember, we surf so you don’t have to. But if you do stumble upon something great that you think is worthy of inclusion in a future FFF, please post it in the comments below. See you next week with a fresh set of films!

Bon appétit bien sûr! from Bearnishfly on Vimeo.

If you like watching trout feed on the surface, then this is the video for you. From the first brown in shallow water to the incredible shot at 2:44, which looks like CGI, this clip from France shows some of the coolest takes ever.

Yeah, this is an advertisement, but the fly-fishing footage and the stunning scenery make it worth entry here in the FFF. You can just skip the talking-head and lodge shots, if you want. The rest is, as they say, a feast for the eyes.

TailingLoop.Tumblr.com Presents: FLYmingo ENP from Tailing Loop Miami on Vimeo.

Apparently, Flamingo ROCKS! Short and sweet, this video offers fast action for redfish and snook, with some snappy editing and a soundtrack that requires headphone if you’re at the office.

Grass Carp Fly Fishing | Grass Carp On The Fly | Grassies On Fly from In The Riffle on Vimeo.

Sure, common carp are all the rage, but grass carp present different challenges. It’s tough to get close, so you usually have to make long casts. This angler gets schooled pretty hard on the first fish but then makes up for it.

the Rabbit Hole from Kimbo on Vimeo.

Oh, the magic of stumbling on an unknown or hidden spot. These fly fisher find a bit of brown-trout Shangri La after following a narrow pathway through the brush.

Sabalo from James Kadlick on Vimeo.

In Texas, they do tarpon a little bit different. Check out the cutoff jeans, camo hat, and banjo music. It’s a far cry from the hip-hop-listenin’, buff-wearin’ Keys crowd, eh? But that’s a hell of a fish, and there’s some sweet boatside action. Hook ’em, Horns! Warning: a couple of effbombs.

Utah’s Green River is a pretty special place, with an unbelievable trout population. This video really captures the feeling of a sun-drenched day on the water.

wandering wild. from WY Fly media on Vimeo.

A man and his girlfriend all alone in the Wyoming backcountry, chasing wild trout. Sounds like a perfect date to me. The filmmaker, Morgan Ford, writes: “This was my girlfriend’s first time to land a rainbow or brown, as well as her first trifecta—brook, brown, bow.” And if you’ve never heard Joe Pug, you’re in for a treat.

I’ll put the warning up front on this one: a couple nuclear effbombs dropped here. This is a very cool video that shows the cast, the huge strike, and a great fight from a 10-pound tigerfish in South Africa. The profanity is all of the positive type, so I suspect no offense will be taken.

Driftless from Currents on Vimeo.

A different view of the Driftless Area of Wisonsin is on display here. Rather than the tiny streams flowing through meadows, there are some larger rivers, with undercuts, cliffs, and gorgeous trout. That brown at 2:25 is a slab of buttery goodness.

It’s really exciting to see so many youngsters making fly-fishing videos. This one is from Austin Manthey, who has been a fly fisher since he was eight. Now he even has his own blog. I suspect we’ll be seeing and hearing more from this young man.

Tampa Bay Beach Tarpon on Fly 6/11/12 from FishbuzzTV on Vimeo.

Back to Florida for some more tarpon action, from Tampa Bay. I love the shots of dark masses ghosting through the water, silhouetted against the sandy bottom. Lots and lots of refusals lead up to that moment of truth. . . .

SWFF Japanese seabass vol.5 Night Games! version remake. from yottan1091 on Vimeo.

This video is about twice as long as it needs to be, but I love the way it tries to capture the urban landscape of Yokohama. We don’t often think of Japanese anglers as “hardcore,” but buzzing around at night among monstrous ships in search of seabass looks pretty badass to me. Have a great weekend!
