Lodge Updates from the Field

Written by: Paul Fersen

I had the privilege of working with Rizzoli Press in New York, writing two big coffee table books, one on fishing lodges Great Fishing Lodges of North America, Fly Fishing’s Greatest Destinations, and Great Hunting Lodges of North America, Wingshooting’s Finest Destinations due in October. Both of these were a pleasure to write; the subject matter was fascinating, particularly for one who likes to hunt and fish as much as I do. What was truly remarkable is the variety of experiences out there; not just in the different types of fishing and hunting, but the variation in accommodations, settings, amenities, and overall atmosphere. The fact is, you can stay at a number of places ranked as the best in the world and have a great fishing experience. Case in point, Triple Creek Ranch which Travel and Leisure’s just ranked as the #2 hotel in the entire world. That it sits in Darby, Montana as opposed to New York or Paris makes it that much more fascinating.

On the other end of the spectrum you can stay in a rustic cabin at Libby’s Camps in Maine’s wilderness and enjoy the ultimate true fish-camp experience. The hospitality and the service is no less, it’s just the experience is totally different. In either case, the fishing is excellent. You can hunt birds in the Blue Ridge at Primland in Virginia or chase chukar down a cliff in Idaho at Flying B. In either place you will receive remarkable attention and service.

Each week, here on OrvisNews.com I will be giving you an update directly from one of the lodges and exactly what is going on at the high point of its season, whether the salmon are in, the birds are moving, or the tarpon have arrived. And you’ll get a brief recap of the experience you can enjoy there.

I hope you’ll join me for them and find something here that sparks a desire to get out there and experience what they have to offer. I hope those that have visited will comment and offer their first-hand knowledge. I can tell you without hesitation that each of these places will offer you an experience you will remember forever.
