Beautiful looking, but......
This might be blasphemy, but if I had to do it over again I would not purchase this rod. The craftmanship is superb, the detail is impressive.
However, maybe because i've been fishing graphite for 30 years the feel of this rod makes it a difficult adjustment. The 7.5' length makes casting considerably more difficult then the traditional 9'. The wf5 line just doesn't seem to shoot well through the eyes.
The ferrules, oh those ferrules. You can't twist em', must be put together with hands on each side of the ferrule, straight in and straight out. I read all of the warnings. When first purchased I could not, with all my strength, get the rod together completely and then trying to get the partially inserted rod apart-even harder. You have to be extremely careful obviously considering the price. One slip and the rod's done. I reached out to Orvis asking for help. They emailed me back and suggested ferrule wax, then recanted in an email and said not to use the wax-that it would only make it tighter...weird. A friends suggestion of a light coat of soap and water did the trick.
The rod does however have a great feel when fighting fish. The buyer just has to beware of the vast difference in fishing this kind of rod.

I love this rod
I love this rod. I had to sacrifice my family for it but it works great. I am actually declaring bankruptcy next week but gosh darn am I glad I bought this rod. All of my friends keep saying "Why did you do that, don't you love your family?" and I'm like "Man, have you ever caught a brown this beautiful?" I wish I could explain to everyone how much they need this rod but all they keep complaining about is money and bills. Either way, buy this rod. Your wife will complain and you may lose your house but, I have never felt so american.

...insufficient superlatives....
Of all the bamboo rods I have owned and fished over the years, these Orvis swelled-butt rods have to be the most enjoyable to cast. (I pair mine with the limited-release UK-made CFO and a Superfine WF5F line.) The nickel-silver hardware, cork-and-burl reel seat, the silk wrappings, the winding check, the overall fit and finish of every segment, and the fine-grain bamboo, all combine in an heirloom-quality piece that I (you) will use the rest of my (your!) fishing life. (The rod I keep strung up over the back door, the one I call my "meat stick," is an old Orvis Impregnated Model 99, and if the Adirondack fishes half as long as that one has served, it will have outlived me.) We'll let the grandkids sort out who gets it.

Toughest rod ever
My rod got bent by a heavy weight that fell against it. Bent to about a 30 degree angle. No way it shouldn't have broken. To my surprise no damage at all. Great rod.

Best Fly Rod Ever
This is by far the best fly rod I have ever used. I fish a small stream in Missouri and the rod's flex makes it very easy to cast. I feel like a pro when I use it! This rod is worth every penny and I will definitely use it every time I go fly fishing.

Truly superb...
I've long desired a classic bamboo rod as I love the slower action and more traditional feel. This rod is just fantastic. I've fished it in still water, fast flow rivers and small mountain streams and loved every minute of it. The feel is unparalleled in my experience. It can easily cast with precision out 50-60 feet (the longest I've tried) and still be precise and delicate at 10-20 feet.
The full flex action makes even the smallest of mountain stream fish fun. If I had to own just one rod, this would be it. My only complaint is that I didn't take the plunge sooner.

Great traditional fly rod
Just received my rod and could not wait to take down to my local river to try, although out of season i just had to see how it cast, and i was not disappointed.I choose to use a 5wt d/t line, although it said w/f on the rod ,but it was so easy to cast and i had 40ft of line out with no problem's ,accurate and precise, i hit the target every time, i have try'd several cane rods over the year's but nothing cast's quite like this .Well done Orvis a truly great rod.
