Classic Bird Hunts, WI

Overview

Catering to the foot hunter in pursuit of all wild game birds over classic pointing dogs, we have been in the guiding business for over 30 years. Hunt behind our world class Brittanys or bring your own dogs. We have a guide for you whether you choose ruffed grouse in the forests of Wisconsin, three species of quail in Arizona, or Bobwhite and Pheasant in Kansas. A brace of September woodcock followed by a covey of Mearns Quail in January let Classic Bird Hunts provide wing shooting thrills. These hunts are not for the faint of heart as you will be walking miles in a day's hunt. However, heart stopping memories will be your reward. If you are looking for traditional foot hunts over savvy pointing dogs, Classic Bird Hunts is the outfitter for you. Don't expect a leisurely preserve or meat hunt; all your birds will be earned. Upland hunting and bird dogs is our passion and our life and we enjoy nothing more than sharing the challenge and tradition with you.

Region/Terrain Where You Hunt

Wisconsin
Our hunts for Ruffed Grouse & Woodcock are generally flat terrain in heavily wooded cover. Much of your time will be spent walking trails while the pointing dogs do the heavy lifting. When the dog is on point it's your turn to get to work, and by no means is it a walk in the park! Quite often you'll bust through heavy brush, get side by side with the dog on point only to have the grouse bust out just a few feet away and barely be seen let alone shot at. But then there are the times when everything falls into place and the grouse makes a tactical error and the reward is oh so sweet. There is a direct correlation between how many miles walked in a day and the numbers of birds moved. This is a challenging hunt vs. “The King of Game Birds” and the majority of the time “The King” wins. Dare I say there is a certain romance to the grouse hunt as described in literature from the likes of George “Bird” Evans and Burton Spiller. You will leave the woods with stories of your own to be told over and over. Are you up for the challenge? Be very careful - grouse hunting is highly addictive!

Arizona
The rugged vistas of the cowboy west are home to three species of Arizona quail - the mearns, the gambels, and that riverboat gambler known as the scaled or blue quail. These quail offer the most diverse hunt of any on the Classic Bird Hunts menu. The gambels and scalies will be found in the desert, an undulating sea of grass, cactus and yucca that is at once harsh and beautiful. You will find it difficult to believe that a couple dozen or more of these birds could be off the end of a Brttany's nose in cover that couldn't hide an ant, until that is, you take the one-more-step that fills the air with whirring wings. Mearns, by contrast, will insist that you lace your boots tight, pack a water bottle and burn a few calories. They inhabit the rocky fingers and washes that are usually found above 4000 feet. They will make you sweat, they will make you swear and they will make you laugh, but to hold one in hand, taken on the wing and over a point is to hold the Stanley Cup of quail. You may be a little tired and you may be a little sore, but more than anything you will be ready to find another covey. It is that good. We have hunted these birds in T-shirts and lunched on the tail gate with an inch of snow crunching under our boots. The contrasts in these hunts are part of what keep us coming back. There is nothing vanilla about the birds, the cover, or the country. Limited, exclusive all inclusive hunts available on The Babacomari Ranch, the largest contiguous ranch in Arizona.

Typical Weather by Season

All hunts weather can vary widely so be ready for anything. Comfortable water resistant boots are a must for any of our hunts as is rain and cold weather gear.

Itinerary

Sample of Typical Itinerary

A minimum of one days booking is required for all our hunts, though we recommend a three day hunt. These are all wild bird hunts and the number of birds moved each day will vary. There are days when the birds are not active or the weather plays a factor. Three days will give you have ample opportunity to experience what Classic Bird Hunts is all about.

Excellent experience all around - 10/4/2014
    By:

My friend Todd and I arrived Sunday evening to a warm welcome by CBH. Within minutes we were in settled into very comfortable accommodations and engaged in great conversation on the upcoming daily activities. Mark and Randy provided great guidance on where the birds would be which came to fruition. Day one lead to approximately 30 birds flushed behind the power of their well-trained Brittany spaniels. On Day one we were amazed by Zoe and Lucy who seemed to find every bird in the forest. These two would hold point beyond belief. Not to be trumped by old school Bella who performed a water retrieve. On day two, Spooner would range to find the birds in tough conditions but yet hold point until we arrived. In total about 50 or 60 birds were flushed in two days which lead to more shooting than we ever imagined. Hard days of hunting were followed by excellent meals and the comfortable accommodations. It was truly an experience I will never forget. Thank you Mark, Randy, Dogs and the supporting CBH crew.

    Family Affair - 4/8/2014
    By: from Milwaukee WI

I've been hunting with CBH for twenty years and have even trusted them with my teenaged children. Top notch guides, fantastic dogs - In fact I just got my first French Brittany seven months ago with their help - and the accommodations are first class. This is much more than just a hunt, its an "experience" that lasts and lasts!

They chose the right name! - 2/2/2014
    By: from Indiana

I've hunt with Classic Bird Hunts in several different states/environments and I'm always impressed how well the dogs transition from the thick Wisconsin woods, to the open grass of Kansas and to the rocky hillsides of Arizona. The guides' appreciation for good dog work, scenic locations and fair chase is quite evident. They offer a true "classic bird hunt".

    top flight guides - 1/27/2014
    By: from Minneapolis

I’ve been hunting with Classic Bird Hunts for approximately 20 years, primarily in Wisconsin but also in Arizona. As a ‘dog guy’, I truly appreciate their love, and concern for, their dogs. Dogs aren’t just a tool for them; they’re more like partners in the hunt: you can tell that the dogs are having fun while hunting. I like that. Beyond that, CBH is about ethical hunting. It’s always great to see a lot of birds, and you often will, but Mark and Randy are dedicated to upholding the standards of the sport, and respecting the quarry. All in all, a first class operation.

Hunting the Way Hunting Sould Be - 1/27/2014
    By: from Fairfield, CT

I have had the great pleasure of hunting with Classic Bird Hunts over a full grouse cycle in Wisocnsin. Mark and Randy run a peerless operation that starts and finishes with an abiding respect for this king of gamebirds. Their emphasis on safety, ecology and classic sporting traditions are second to none. They invest heavily in their Brittanys and the dog work is superb. Their access to a seemingly endless array of productive coverts is testimony to the work they put in during the off-season to ensure their clients experience variety and see ample opportunities to take birds. They are great company in the field and at camp who each possess the unique combination of skill, flexibility, humor and patience that keeps clients happy and coming back.

    World Class Hunting & People - 1/26/2014
    By: from Milwaukee, WI

My father and I had the great fortune to join Classic Bird Hunts last week in Arizona for two days of guided quail hunting. Despite unusually warm, dry weather, H.G. Mark and Captain Randy and their wonderful pack of Brittany's had us on several coveys of Scaled and Mearns's quail each day. I would highly recommend CBH and a trip to AZ for anyone looking for a truly unique hunting experience and all around great time.
