Instead of “entry level,” we think of our Encounter rod outfits as “affordable awesomeness.” The 8'6" 5-weight Encounter rod outfit is the answer to the question, "What's the first rod I should buy?". Ideal as an all around rod for trout and light bass fishing, the Encounter is the perfect first rod for any fly angler.
The Encounter series rods are exempt from our standard 25-year guarantee, but do come with a limited warranty against defects in the original workmanship. If, by any means, the rod is deemed defective by our Rod Shop, Orvis will be happy to replace it.

Excellent equipment for the price
I'm an avid spinning and bait casting fisherman, so I'm not completely in the dark when it comes to trout fishing--or the wallet-busting world of rods and reels. Yet, that first toe dip into the world of fly fishing is a little intimidating to say the least. To find my first outfit for learning to fly fish, I extensively searched online, in stores, and read about two hundred million reviews (give or take a few). For bang for the buck for learners and intermediates, the Orvis Encounter Outfit is ideal. It looks great, feels well-balanced and responsive in the hand, and ensures that whatever mistakes I might be making with my cast, wasting time on a sub-par rod and reel is not among them. I wholeheartedly recommend.

Solid Combo
Very nice combo, especially for the price. I bought this for my son who is 12. I looked at just about every outfit from $100 to $200 and I think I made the right choice. Just wish the rod was Orvis green...the grey is a little drab. I would recommend to anyone looking for a solid beginner rod and reel.

You won't be disappointed!
This fly rod outfit was recommended to me by my brother-in-law who is a very knowledgeable and avid fly fisherman. He was right in that it feels like an expensive set up but is very reasonably priced for the beginner. I haven't done a lot of fly fishing but can attest that this outfit will more than meed my needs.

Ordered this rod and had it in three days, wow, great service. Haven't used it yet so only can give it a 4 star but it feels great. Was looking for a medium weight and length rod and this jumped out from the crowd, appears to be a good entry/second rod.
Can't beat Orvis service.

Took the free class at the store... Then went into a stream in the VA mountains with loaner gear for a weekend. Time to start buying my own.

Best Introductory Outfit I've Ever Purchased!
I purchased two Encounter 5 wt outfits for a young couple who expressed an interest in learning to fly fish. They both love the rigs, are learning quickly, casting gracefully and seeking advanced instruction and new water to fish. I fished the Encounter and found it to be perfect for a variety of water conditions for the beginner and intermediate angler. It's weighted and balanced nicely, casts smoothly, responds quickly and acts great on fish.
