The Encounter series rods are exempt from our standard 25-year guarantee, but do come with a limited warranty against defects in the original workmanship. If, by any means, the rod is deemed defective by our Rod Shop, Orvis will be happy to replace it.

Could not ask for a better starter outfit!
The Encounter outfit has performed beyond my expectation. Just after going on my first couple fishing trips I found this outfit to be extremely easy to use with a balanced feel and plenty of performance potential to tap into as I hone by fishing skill. Hands down a top outfit for anyone looking to start fly fishing.

Encounter Outfits
I'm really impressed with the Encounter outfits. These are perfect outfits for casting clinics and having used them in the past, they seem to be indestructible to the abuse 100-200 grade schoolers administer over the period of a day. I even like the Encounter reels! Light weight, great drag, top notch grips, and almost silent, these reels are tough and a perfect match to the rod. The Encounter rod is my favorite, at it's price point. There's nothing comparable on the market. I have people bring competitor's outfits to clinics, and after they cast the Encounter outfit, they are dumbfounded! I can't imagine what they would think about casting a Helios2, a Recon, or a Clearwater.

Family Fly Rods
Wonderful product that will be used by the family for many years. Bought two Encounter 5-weight 9" combos as Christmas presents for my 12 and 15 years sons after we got got some fly fishing training this past summer. Even though this is generally marketed as a entry product, it is far better quality than what they trained on and it looks great with a nice travel case. Responsive rod and very smooth reel. It looked great coming out of the box as a present and the boys just loved the whole package. Hard to believe the rod and reel could be of this quality at this price. The boys reviewed the online Orvis fly fishing basics video as a refresher and started having fun. With the included cases it is easy for them to bring to take the combo on their bikes to local fishing spots. We now totally trust Orvis as a fly fishing resource and will look into an Orvis fly fishing course in our area this spring.

Day after fishing
I gave this rod to my 17 year old grandson and he is out fishing with it today 12/27. He caught 2 bass and said that he loves the rod . Great for the young fisherman.

Quite the Encounter
New to fly fishing, I bought this outfit 6 months ago and have been using it each weekend for full day fishing trips. Combine this outfit with the Orvis Learning Center tutorials, and a healthy dose of Tom Rosenbauer's Orvis Podcasts, and you'll be hooking Rainbows and Brown trout in no time. Incredible price-point. My only gripe is with the reel, which is a little cheap, but perfectly functional and keeps that price point below anything else i've seen on the market. Bravo Orvis.

Highly recommended gift
Though not personally a fly fisherman, after MANY conversations with and recommendations from fly fishing friends, we purchased this as a gift for our son. We couldn't be more pleased with the quality of the outfit and the speed with which we received our order. When it comes to purchasing a starter outfit, our fly fishing friends gave us excellent advice.

Great for Beginners
This rod and reel is perfect for those wanting to give fly fishing a try. Easy to set up and comes with a nice case for traveling. For the price the quality exceeds outfits found in major retail stores.
