    Easiest purchase ever - 2/24/2014
    By: from Pittsburg,NH

Stopped in to look, saw the shirt, asked if it was available in a larger size: next thing I knew I was giving my credit card to someone on a phone and my shirt was on it's way to NH--now that was Southern hospitality

    Cotton/Merino Shirt - 1/6/2014

Excellent craft and style. Fit and function were as expected. Costly, but should be worth it's price - depending on how it does over the years. Time will tell - but good thus far!

I gave this to my husband for Christmas, and he loves it, although he hasn't put it on yet. I hope it fits! But then, Orvis almost always fits correctly.

Beautiful, classy and practical - 12/8/2013
    By: from Melbourne, FL

I am delighted to find this beautiful shirt for my special friend this holiday season. I've known and used the cotton/wool combination in British fabrics for a great many years and highly recommend it for comfort, durability and looks. How about offering a similar shirt for women?

Nicest sport shirt you can buy - 12/4/2013
    By: from Tallahassee, FL

I have long treasured my Orvis casual shirts. The fabric is exquisite, the colors true and long lasting, the fit perfect. I always get compliments when I wear it and it makes me feel good. The wool and cotton blend is particularly well done.

Sizing label way off - 11/2/2013
    By: from Winfield, KS

Ordered size Large. The shirt I received was so Large, it probably was at least an XL, but more likely was closer to an XXL. I have two other Large size shirts from O, and one is just right while the other is a bit Large! I am 42 chest, 36 waist, HT 6'1". I will exchange for the Medium size.

    Very nice shirt. - 1/24/2013
    By: from Durango, Colorado

I'd never worn a combo cotton and wool shirt before purchasing this one. Extremely fine material. I went with the gray option, which is a unique combination of colors. I receive compliments on the shirt every time I wear it. The stripe is black so it goes very nicely with a black sweater. I'm very pleased with this purchase .

Luxury Cotton & Merino

Brisbane Moss mill circa 1912.In the late eighteenth Century at the dawn of the industrial revolution, the English developed a method of spinning wool and cotton in almost identical quantities. William Hollins and Company, a spinner and knitter in Nottinghamshire, England, developed the original fabric that was used for decades in sportswear, military uniforms, and outerwear.

The genius of his method was that the yarns were indigenously spun combining the warmth of very soft lambswool and long-staple cotton (from far-flung corners of the trade routes of the English Empire), to engineer a very light fabric of exceptional warmth and durability. The chief characteristic of wool is the individual fiber’s ability to trap body warmth and wick moisture; while the chief characteristic of cotton is its smooth and absorbent nature. The expert blending and spinning of the right percentages of these unrelated fibers became a miracle of the age.

Weaving room circa 1890.A more commonly acceptable blend of 81% cotton and 19% lambswool, which was woven as a twill and brushed into a flannel, was produced from the beginning for workwear and more rugged intensive activities. This traditional blend is today the basis of our exclusive Luxury Cotton & Merino fabric.

We found that the longer fibers of today’s merino sheepswool spin tighter and more completely with our long-staple cotton than the older lambswool  (little lambswool fibers, although soft, are very short ). This tightness of yarn establishes the durability while holding the vivid dyes in these yarn-dyed patterns, which have been carefully selected and executed from our textile pattern library.
