The Orvis Fly Fishing School in Utah is hosted by Jans Mountain Outfitters in Park City. Great fly fishing is available on the blue ribbon waters of the nearby Provo and Weber Rivers in the beautiful Wasatch Mountains. Park City offers a variety of others activities, including historic Main Street with great shopping and dining. The school covers everything from fly casting, choosing the right tackle, leaders and knots, to fly selection, and how to safely release fish.

You'll cover it all at the Orvis Utah Fly Fishing School:

  • Fly casting techniques (including video analysis on the Two-Day School)
  • Essential fly fishing knots
  • How to choose your gear and tackle
  • Fly selection
  • How to read water
  • How to play, land, photograph, and safely release fish

Tuition includes comprehensive instruction, lunches, and use of Orvis fly tackle.

Cancellation Policy & Fees:
If you cancel your reservation outside of 30 days from your school date, Orvis will issue a refund back to your original method of payment. Cancellations within 30 days from your school date are subject to a 20% cancellation fee, and a refund will be issued in the form of an Orvis Gift Card. Orvis Gift Cards never expire and can be used to book your next school reservation or to purchase other Orvis product. School transfers are based on availability and can be done at any time (cancellation fees do not apply). Students that do not attend their scheduled school and do not notify the school reservation department will be charged in full.

1-Day Program Itinerary

9:00 a.m. Student registration at Jans flagship store, 1600 Park Ave.
9:15 a.m. Introduction and discussion of class program.
9:30 a.m. Classroom presentation - Tackle and flies
10:00 a.m. Classroom presentation – The Orvis Progressive Method to Fly Casting video.
10:30 a.m. Demonstration on fishing flies
11:00 a.m. Basic entomology, fly selection, tips on how to handle photograph and release fish. Demonstration hook-setting and fish fighting techniques
11:30 a.m. Class presentation - Knot tying seminar. Discussion on leaders, hands-on knot tying
12:00 Lunch (catered to school.)
1:00 p.m. Report to casting pond for demonstration on shooting line, false casting, and roll casting; students casting.
2:00 p.m. Pond fishing trip-Demonstration on hook-setting and fish fighting techniques
2:30 p.m. Students fishing and practice casting
3:00 p.m. Student walk through fly shop during a Q & A using knowledge from classroom
3:45 p.m. Return to classroom for closing statements, and graduation certificates.
4:00 p.m. End of School.

10:45 a.m. Report to casting pond for demonstration on the double haul. Demonstration on fishing flies in still water; students casting and fishing
12:00 Lunch (catered to School)
1:00 p.m. Travel to Provo River
1:20 p.m. Orvis-endorsed fishing trips and tips on fishing with guides. Tips on wading safety.
1:35 p.m. Provo River trip – Discussion on reading water. Locating and identifying basic river entomology. Demonstration on fishing flies in moving water; students fishing
3:45 p.m. Return to schoolroom for closing statements and graduation certificates
4:30 p.m. End of school.
