Back country mule
Used this to haul extra rods and gear wherever I go. It holds all my extra warm weather clothes, extra socks, extra rods and reels plus food, water and coffee. Pairs perfect with my chip pack, is extremely comfortable and breathable. Plus I think it just looks good.

Great Product
Started out with my other brand "water resistant" day pack and took on 20 lbs of water so i decided to try out the Safe Passage pack along with the chip pack. My next trip things stayed 100% dry and this new pack was a lot more comfortable. No sore shoulders after day long trip. It also held everything i needed with some room to spare.

Review of Orvis Safe Passage Day Pack.
Disclamer: I was in no way bribed, gifted, or forced into writing this review. I purchased the pack on my own for my own trials and errors. This review reflects the tests I have subjected this pack to so far and my honest opinion of it.
Appearance:
The Orvis Safe Passage Day Pack has a great neutral color scheme. The shade of moss green that they used is quite nice and blends in to the woods, dirt and rock that is quite common when tackling small and medium sized streams. The dark grey patches help pockets and pouches stand out without saying “Here I am!” to all the fish in the stream.
The Safe Passage Day Pack comes with a good deal of pockets, two outside pockets, one on each side with cinch straps above them to hold in tall/long items such as a fly rod.
A flat wide front pocket which can be used to hold maps, compass, extra shirt, landing net, etc. It should be noted that that pocket is waterproof so putting wet clothes or a soggy landing net won’t get the rest of your gear wet inside the bag. The bag also has a smaller top pouch with one zipper and a main pouch (which almost runs the full circumference of the bag) with two independent zippers.
At the top of the bag, a heavy duty handle for helping to put on your back or carrying.
Adjustable shoulder straps with cross strap, and adjustable lumbar support for your waist help make this a perfect fit for any day hiker.
Construction:
The fabric is tough and sturdy with good zippers but not too heavy for a day pack. I have had the main compartment zipper get, lets say, fidgety, when on the brink of over packing. The bottom of the bag also has some waterproof lining on the outside so setting your bag down on wet ground or a soggy, moss covered rock won’t get your gear on the inside wet.
So far, this pack has made it through some adventures in Harpers Ferry, Shenandoah National Park, and George Washington National Forest, with barely a scratch. There is also a ridged mesh net that keeps the pack off your back. While this has worked for the amount of stuff I have fit into the pack, I wouldn’t go much heavier than 20 lbs of
stuff as the weight is too much and closes the gap that is needed for good air flow.
Inside:
Inside the main compartment, which runs the whole length of the bag, it is divided into two sections. The first being on the inside of the front of the pack and the second being the area that sits against your back.
The first section includes 3 zippered pouches sown in with mesh. One runs up to where top pocket begins, and the other two run that length, but are divided in the middle by stitching. These pockets are perfect for storing extra fly cases, a deck of cards, fire starter, or whatever you need to carry, but do not need direct access to. In my load out I even keep my Battenkill I reel with two Tacky day pack fly boxes in one of the smaller divided pouches.
There is also a zipper which opens up to the top outside pouch. This is a great feature as most of the time my pack is laying open on the rocks and to get to anything inside that pouch, you would normally have to zip up any of your loose items that are laying out as to not fling them all over the place when you flip over the front section. This added zipper makes getting to the items in that pocket easy and effortless.
In the second section, the section that is closest to your back when wearing the pack, you have two main compartments. These compartments are divided by a half-removable fabric divider. To me, this divider is really what makes this day pack a noteworthy pack.
The divider clips into place with two plastic clips that holds the fabric perpendicular to your back. This allows you to create two semi-sealed compartments for larger items. I have found that the bottom section of this is actually quite deceiving. I was able to fit my entire ENO hammock sleep system inside of this area, with room to spare. That includes
the hammock, bug net, rain fly, straps, and stakes for guying out the fly. Despite having my whole sleep system in this secondary compartment, I still have room to spare in that section.
As for the main compartment, Its spacey enough to fit several freeze dried meals as well as my wading shoes comfortably. This compartment is also spacey enough for a change of clothes, heavy winter jacket, waders, etc. If you need extra room, you can always disengage the clips holding the divider and use the full length and width of the inside
compartment. Just to give you an idea of how much room that is, I was able to fit my 3 season sleeping bag and my ultra light 1 person tent in to the main compartment.
Considerations:
There are a couple of places I’d like to see some modifications. Considering the rugged terrain some people will go to to find fish and how remote those areas can be, I’d like to see an emergency whistle built into the cross strap on the should strap, just like your average day pack. I don’t know about you, but if I slip on a mossy rock in a river, I want people to know where I am when they’re looking.
I’d also like to see the lumbar support move about 3 inches down. While I didn’t have any issue hiking down to (and up from) Jeremy’s Run in Shenandoah National Park, the lumbar support felt a little high on my waist when my shoulder straps were adjusted properly. For me, it wasn’t a big issue as I was able to find a comfortable adjustment for me. I’m 5’9” and a solid build at 200lbs and the pack was very comfortable on the long, uphill hikes. Having another 3” to the bottom of this pack though is moving it right to the edge of what a day pack should be.
Lastly, I’d like to see a mesh organization pocket in the top outside pocket for some smaller items like a head lamp, bug spray, etc. Things you need quick access to and are small/loose so they don’t rattle around in your ear when you’re hiking.
Summary:
I was pleasantly surprised with the durability and thought that went into this pack. The small pockets (which are hard to find on a normal backpacking day pack) on the inside are perfect for holding fly fishing gear.
There is *plenty* of room for anything you need to pack. And to push this pack to the limits, I have actually managed to turn this into a weekend pack. You can explore with out leaving the majority of your creature comforts at home.
I’m an avid backpacker, I’ve hike most of the trails for southeastern, central and northern Virginia, and that includes large sections of the AT and have a good idea of what makes a day pack great, not just good. So far the Safe Passage Day Pack from Orvis has stood up to day and overnight hikes through some pretty rough terrain and thick underbrush. While I do try and take care of my things, accidents happen, and having confidence that your gear will be ok if you pack slides off a slick boulder into a stream or goes tumbling down a hill is very important. Overall, I’ll be keeping this pack around for a long time and I hope it will get me into, and out of, some great fishing adventures.

Great system
Fantastic pack. Bought this in Jackson, WY after fishing Yellowstone and jamming everything into my pack only to frustratingly reach in and try to dig it out. Able to carry 2 rod setups, rain gear, and extra base layers. With my packable waders strapped to the side and my wading boots in the main pocket, I was able to hike further and fish those cold mountain waters no problem. Just bought the chip pack to eliminate the need for my vest. Fantastic system. Only gripe that really isn't a gripe but having a hydration pocket for my camelback would be great. It's not that hard to drink from a water bottle though.

Almost perfect layout
I've traveled with this pack to Cuba and Alaska. In Alaska there is no such thing as poor conditions, just poor gear. I was able to carry everything I needed in this pack for hiking and fly fishing the beautiful rivers for salmon. The pack held up well to constant abuse, submersion and fish slime!I just wish it was water proof. The shelf makes it easy to reach the stuff you need quickly. I highly recommend this pack. I recently purchased the waterproof shell for added protection of my camera and dry clothing.

needed something for small treks
This is exactly what I was looking for. Use on short fishing treks to carry just enough for one day.

GREAT Day Pack
Purchased this daypack for my upcoming AK trip, specs are exactly as advertised. The design is very well thought-out. The two rod tube holders also double as water bottle holders, allowing me to mix and match. There's enough space and accesses to put everything I need for a day of hike/wade, although I wear a vest to carry everything I want to have instantly accessible (fly boxes, tippet, tools). I'm a bit tall at 6-1, but the hip belt fits very comfortably and the shoulder straps have just the right amount of padding. I looked hard at sling packs, but daypack+vest gives me a ton more flexibility and carrying capacity. Perfect when I need to pack raingear, extra base layers, a couple of extra reels, etc.
