The High Lonesome Ranch main ranch season runs from mid May through early November while the K-T Ranch season runs from mid May to early June then again from July through mid October. Expeditions are available mid March through December.
Flies, terminal tackle. Rod/reel rental is available at $40/per day.
Fishing on the main ranch begins well up in the valley where the first pools begin to collect and pattern out to hold huge fish. As the initial pool fills and then spills, often the water will traverse back underground before pooling again further down valley and creating a new body of water - always varying in size, shape and depth. The formation of some of these pools has been assisted by our local beaver population. The terrain is easily reached and comfortable to fish from many different approaches.
The fishing along the White River at the K-T Ranch is also easily accessible and starts within a very short ATV ride or a nice walk from the ranch house. Our three spring creeks and beaver pond are a bit more hidden away but very worthy of exploration.
With Expeditions the Roaring Fork is available mainly for float trips and locals say is consistent for catching fish any time of the year for 4 species including Mountain Whitefish, many over 20". The Lower Colorado from Glenwood Springs all the way to Rifle is the ultimate when conditions are right, which is the majority of the year. In 2013 Field & Stream magazine named Glenwood Springs as America's #1 Fly Fishing Town. The riverbanks vary from large boulders bigger than cars to ranch lands and large overhanging Weeping Willow trees. This is a Freestone river with wild fish that have never been caught in their lifetime. Big water, big fish, big fights - a local's favorite. The Frying Pan and the Crystal River are ideal for wading. The Pan is very scenic and has wonderful hatches. The Crystal is one of the better-kept secrets of the valley with large fish on a small river.
The fishing season generally begins at The High Lonesome Ranch in mid-May but varies from year to year. The early part of the year is cool and comfortable with a possible rare afternoon shower. As the summer approaches and the air warms, it remains dry and comfortable for all-day fishing activity. The season tails off into cooler mornings and early evenings starting in late September and remains pleasant through most of October and begins to close in November.
At our K-T Ranch the fishing weather fires up quickly as soon as ice is off the river, generally starting in mid to late May. The month of June and into very early July the run-off is generally too high to fish. By July the flow slows back to the normal volume and the fishing is fast and furious. The temperatures during the early part of the season remain cool in the mornings and late in the day but the mid-daytime temps are very comfortable. As the summer unfolds the weather just gets better and better with nice warm days, low humidity and cool evenings. The season begins to taper in late September and wraps up by mid October.
The Expeditions are typically available from mid-March through December.
Fishing is always accompanied by professional guides, and they are ready to go immediately following breakfast. At the main ranch, your guide will drive you up into the valley to the particular beat that has been reserved for that day. The drive is generally less than 20-25 minutes. Fishing will take place all morning, lunch is served back at the Cook House, and then fishing will continue after lunch until late in the afternoon.
At the K-T Ranch your guide will transport guests via an ATV to the White River, only a few minutes from the ranch house. Shore lunch is offered at a picnic location nearby and the fishing will continue afterwards until late in the afternoon. For trips that are 4 or more nights in length at The High Lonesome Ranch include a day on the White River if the guests wishes.
HLR Fly-fishing Expeditions will also depart right after breakfast for the Roaring Fork, the Lower Colorado, or whichever your chosen destination is for the day. Shore lunches will be available (with table!) and you'll fish until late afternoon and get back to the HLR just in time for happy hour.
Our ranch has available a wide range of sporting pursuit activities that include, birding, wildlife viewing, horseback rides, sporting clays, trout fishing, wingshooting, hiking, mountain biking, and also cooking classes and massage. Contemporary western meals, famous big breakfasts, fireside appetizers complete with the day’s photos and stories, after dinner fire pit star gazing.
If you can take time from your fishing trip, day trips to Glenwood Hot Springs are available, winery tours, wild horse viewing, golf, and whitewater rafting.
Elegant, yet very comfortable western accommodation is the name of the game. Big, comfortable, well-appointed suites are available and beds are generally king that can easily convert to two twins if preferred. Private baths, suites and large relaxing living spaces offer the ultimate in relaxing quarters. At the main ranch, there are many choices. From the Pond House with its front-door fishing before breakfast to the Guest House nearer the headquarters and other private cabins around the property, you’ll have your choice. The K-T Ranch is an original homestead 4-bedroom Victorian, also with kings that convert to twins. Contemporary western cuisine is always a welcome surprise. Big hearty breakfasts and ample lunches will keep you well satisfied, even on the most physical of days on the water.
The fishing at the main ranch includes five species that include: rainbow, brown, cuttbow, cutthroat and the native brook trout. On the White River at the K-T Ranch guests will have opportunities for brown, rainbows, brook, cutthroat and whitefish. The Roaring Fork, Colorado, Frying Pan, and Crystal offer you rainbow trout, cuttbow, German Brown and the Mountain Whitefish.

We took our adult kids and their wives for a 3 day trip. I can't say enough good things about the HLR. The staff is friendly and willing to oblige your every whim. As the runoff was in full flood, we fished the ponds. The fishing was easy enough for the novices but technical enough for the experienced anglers. The fishing was great. Our guides, Shannon, Zane and Jake did a super job. The food was Five Star! Better than most Zagat restaurants. We also did sporting clays, biking, swimming, massage, wildlife viewing and more. Our thanks to all the great people at HLR for a wonderful stay, we'll be back.
