WHY WE LOVE CARP
They’re strong, they’re cagey, you can find them almost anywhere, and carp fishing with a fly rod is perhaps the most exciting sight-fishing you can do in fresh water. As one of our customers recently said “It’s about the only chance most fly fishers in the US have of catching a ten-pound fish in fresh water.” We agree, and if you really study your carp resources, you may catch fish much bigger than that magic ten-pound mark.
So let us help you enjoy the journey. We love saltwater fly fishing and we live in trout country. But most of the anglers on the Orvis staff really get jazzed about carp fishing, so we’ve put together some valuable resources for you.
Fly Fishing Guide for Carp
Carp will challenge you technically, test your patience, and make you question your fly-fishing bona fides more than any other freshwater fish. And they get really big; they'll put you into your backing fast. TROUT Magazine managing editor Kirk Deeter meets these non-native fish head-on, examining their history, behavior, diet, and the challenges they pose for even the most accomplished fly fisherman. Covering everything from the approach, the presentation, how to effectively read both fish and water - even recipes for the best patterns to throw - Deeter introduces the most prolific freshwater gamefish to an audience finally ready to stalk them.
Sure you can catch carp on Woolly Buggers or bonefish flies, but why not throw something that’s a proven carp catcher? The following flies are our favorite carp flies, proven in the field throughout the world
We recommend a 9-foot 6-weight, 7-weight, or 8-weight outfit, depending on the size of your water and the size of the fish. The following outfits are our premium Helios 2 outfits, but you can also substitute our mid-priced Access or value-priced Clearwater outfits in the same configuration.
