I purchased this box after debating for a while between the different sizes. The large is a bit big for the pocket of a vest, but great for backpack (I will eventually get it to store my collection once it grows big enough), medium is perfect size but does not have the swinging flap option, which is a no brainer since it the equivalent of getting 1 extra box right there (4 sides total instead of 2). Medium and large are waterproof with a seal running all around the lid, but their latch is quite hard to open… I mean really hard (I wish it was spring loaded or something strong but easy to operate). The small one is very nice for smaller vest pocket, easy to open, but does not have that waterproof rubber seal (I wish it did). So if you do the math you can stack as much fly in the small one as you can in the mid size, without having to deal with any opening issue.
The plastic is strong and good quality, that box should definitively outlast anyone, the swinging flap is very well secure in place, but you can easily remove it as explained by the other review. One of the best feature as to be the foam slit… if you have not use these in the past, they are the best; instead of poking the point of the hook in the foam, you place the bend in the slit, therefore not destroying your foam, but also making taking and placing fly much better. Try it with a fly next time you go at a store, you’ll see its hold way better than other typical approach.,I am so glad I went with the c and f design s size fly box. It is small, compact and very lightweight. This easily replaced 3 current fly box's making the load a little lighter on the stream.,I received one of these small C&F boxes about a year ago as a gift (by request). They have a pretty high price to pay for a fly box, but I believe it to be well worth the investment, and it does make a nice affordable gift for someone to give to a fly angler.
While it may appear a fairly simple product, the design, material, and contruction quality is excellent. I've always been skeptical about the claimed fly capacity of fly boxes, but the fine quality of this box and its slotted foam really allow you to pack them in tighter than others. No snagging on barbs like happens with ripple foam (yes, even crimped ones). The foam in these is very high density and finely machined.
The box I have is a different layout, and you can remove/change the leaf (3 screws, very sturdy). I don't know if the side panels on this model can be easily removed (may be attached with adhesive), but you can change those to different configurations as well (I have 1 side with a panel that holds threaders).
I highly recommend these for your nymph collection, and I like to put a row of small dries on threaders on a leaf option.,I've been using a much bigger fly box which was a bit bulky on some occasions, so I treated myself to a new smaller one and the c and f design s size fly box was the one I went for. It is small, compact and lightweight yet will still hold over 500 flies securely in the slit foam. Even larger ones that it's not really designed for!,I use this box for nearly all my nymphs and it's great. I've tried many... too many, boxes over the years and this is the best I've found to date. Highly recommend.
