Lillard Fly Fishing Expeditions specializes in wilderness fly fishing. During a LFFE expedition you will travel almost entirely by foot, backpacking into remote streams and high alpine lakes where wild trout rise eagerly to flies. The rolling hills of North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains, or the steep peaks of Colorado's Rocky Mountains provide the perfect backdrop for one of their teen fly fishing expeditions.
Expect afternoon showers with highs in the 70s-80s and temperatures occasionally dropping into the low 40's at nights.
Lillard Fly Fishing Expeditions focuses on providing a small number of top quality each year, allowing them to be highly selective with their small staff of only individuals dedicated to providing the best possible experiences for their trip participants. Meet the staff.

The group meets at the Denver Airport and then heads to a nearby campground to get ready for the adventures ahead. From a campsite along a river you will spend day 2 developing your fly fishing skills. This helps our leaders to assess each participant's experience level and prepares you for a trip full of catching fish. Whether you are a first timer or you are a seasoned angler, your guides will work one-on-one with you throughout the trip to take your fly fishing skills to the next level.
After packing our packs we will head to Rocky Mountain National Park for an overnight introduction to back country fly fishing. From our trailhead on the east side of RMNP we will hike to our campsite on the banks of Lawn Lake. The hike will be well worth the effort as the high alpine stream and lake is one of the best places remaining to catch the rare Greenback Cutthroat trout.
As a fly fishermen you must understand the importance of conservation. That is why we dedicate one day of each trip to helping preserve the amazing fisheries we enjoy. On our Rocky Mountain Explorer we spend the day volunteering with the National Parks Service trail crew, helping to prevent stream/trail erosion.
Far from any roads and out of the reach of any day hiker, the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park is home to countless trout filled lakes. The trout in these lakes grow big by eating everything in sight. We will spend the first day of our four day back country trip hiking to our base camp along a trout filled stream. From our base camp we will spend the next two days catching eager Colorado River Cutthroat from the meandering meadow stream, and taking day hikes up to fish the nearby high alpine lakes.
The last two days of your trip will be spent fishing the Colorado River on an overnight rafting/fishing trip with world class Orvis Endorsed guides from Sunrise Anglers. Be ready for some big fish and exciting whitewater during the day, and relax at our luxurious river camp complete with natural hot springs.
You will enjoy a final dinner at our banquet in a local restaurant while sharing pictures, telling stories, and reminiscing about the amazing experience. You will depart from Denver Airport the next morning.
On a Lillard Fly Fishing Expedition you sleep in high quality, fully waterproof tents. As a group, participants choose 5 meals a day (breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner, and desert) from our expeditions cookbook. Expect to be more than full with delicious meals like pancakes and sausage, piled high cold cut sandwiches, and back country pizzas.
You will have the chance to catch rainbow and brown trout, but one of the coolest parts about our teen fly fishing expeditions is backpacking into the remote wilderness to catch native trout including Yellowstone Cutthroat, Greenback Cutthroat, Southern Appalachian Brook Trout, Colorado River Cutthroat, and Snake River Cutthroat.
See a sample of some of the trout caught during our expeditions online here.
Do I need to have fly fishing experience?
No experience is necessary! Depending on the trip about half of the group will have some degree of fly fishing experience while the other half will have very little or no experience. Regardless of your experience level your guides will work with you to help bring your skills to the next level.

Best Summer Trip -
By: mattk12 from Pennsylvania
This past summer I went on the Yellowstone Advanced Expedition. It was the best time of my life. I had so much fun on the trip and it was run so smoothly. I made many friends with the people from my trip and I continue to communicate with them. The fishing was incredible and my trip leaders were awesome. It was such a great time so I decided to sign up for another trip next year. There is already excitement of the trip next summer and I’m really looking forward to it. Last summer was excellent and I can’t wait for another great summer.
Amazing Yellowstone Adventure -
By: OKCorral from White Plains, NY
Sent my 15 year old son on the Yellowstone Adventure - I asked him to rate it and without hesitation he said 10 out of 10 - he had an awesome time. This is a professionally run trip, Will does a fantastic job with the kids, the trip is well balanced including fly fishing instruction, wilderness skills, hiking, camping, site seeing and just good old fashioned fun. My son was fairly new to fly fishing and came back with a love and appreciation for the sport as well as a greater understanding of conservation efforts and the leading role sportsman play in the process. I would highly recommend this trip.
Wonderful Experience -
My son just returned from two weeks in Yellowstone with Will and Tim. He talked nonstop about the trip from the minute he got off the plane until he fell into bed. Loved the fishing, the scenery, the hiking, the other kids, Will and Tim - everything. As a parent I can't say enough about what a pleasure it was working with Will. I had a number of questions which he answered promptly and patiently.
A learning and growing experience and a ton of fun -

The LFFE West Elk Adventure was the best trip my son has ever been on. Very well organized. He came home with a huge sense of accomplishment and tremendous confidence. He matured a few years worth at least. I loved the combination of community service, improving his fishing skills, and camping and hiking skills. I highly recommend this trip and this company.
Solid Investment -

This was the first trip that our son took with LFFE and we are already planning more. From registering to receiving timely updates, everything is done in a professional manner. Most importantly, time unplugged, learning the intricate details of fly fishing and environmental conservation cannot be found in other programs. Independence, leadership skills and community service all make the LFFE experience unique, purposeful and fun. The LLFE program will make a nice addition to his college resume. My son is already excited about planning next summer's adventure!
Great trips. Outstanding leader. -
Our son has spent three consecutive years fly fishing with Will Lillard...in Yellowstone, North Carolina and on a Father-Son trip in Utah. As a parent, I highly recommend him to lead a well-organized, educational and fun trip. As a mom, I highly recommend him as a leader, mentor, and friend and trust him implicitly.
Fantastic Experience -
There are so many things about Lillard Fly Fishing that are special, but one thing that sets them apart is the sense of environmental conservation and community service. They will install a passion and respect for the environment, while fishing and camping in some amazing places. I think it is a lifelong gift for any child to experience this camp. You child will become confident in their abilities as a fly fisherman, outdoorsman and young adult.
My son has participated in two LFFE adventures, one in North Carolina and the other in Colorado. Cole had an outstanding experience both times. Will and his staff have been a pleasure to work with, and keep parents well informed of what's happening. The experience helped my son develop a stronger work ethic and an appreciation for the outdoors. I highly recommend LFFE for your teenager.
Fantastic Trip -
This was one of the best father/son trips I have ever taken. Will and his crew had everything down to a T. The trip required extensive river floating and cordination of large amounts gear, food and fishing equipment that had to be transported downriver by float. Will had it organized and planned so that everything ran smoothly, and all involved had a great time. Lillard Fly Fishing Expeditions has an extremely knowledgeable and capable staff.
