Today's youngsters are the future of the wonderful sport of fly fishing and Orvis and the Ocean Reef Club are proud to offer this exciting 5-day course. Participants will learn how to fly cast using the time-proven Orvis Progressive Method to Fly Casting; how to tie essential knots; how to tie flies; how to choose and fish flies; tips on how to handle photograph and release fish. During the course, participants will fly fish from flats skiffs with local professional captains who are Orvis-Endorsed Guides, and the opportunity to wade fly fish local flats with the Orvis Instructors. In addition, participants go on an exciting, fun-filled, educational trip to John Pennekamp State Park, the only underwater coral reef State Park in the United States. The Orvis Ocean Reef Fly Fishing Kids Day Camp is truly a great experience that will introduce youngsters to a lifetime of enjoyment. Recommended age is 12 to 16 years old.

Monday


Time Activity & Description
9:00 am Registration at the Orvis Retail Store.
9:15 Introductions and discussion of camp program.
9:30 Classroom presentation - Lines, rods, and reels.
10:30 Travel to the Orvis Casting Grounds for a demonstration on the Orvis Progressive Method to Teaching Fly Casting, Part 1: The Basic Cast. Participants casting.
11:15 Classroom presenation - Knot tying seminar: Discussion on leaders and hands-on knot tying.
12:15 pm Lunch at Orvis Schoolroom.
1:00 Travel to the Orvis Casting Grounds for a demonstration on the Orvis Progressive Method to Teaching Fly Casting, Part 2: Shooting line, false casting, and roll casting. Participants casting. Video tape participants casting.
2:00 Travel to Key Largo Anglers Club to feed fish at the sanctuary.
3:00 Classroom presentation – Introduction to fly tying: Discussion and demonstration on fly tying; participants tying flies.
4:00 End of first day.

Tuesday


Time Activity & Description
8:15 am Meet at Orvis Store for a day trip to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. The day will start-off with an educational glass bottom boat trip (boat leaves at 9:15 a.m. for the 2 ½ hour trip.)
12:00 pm Lunch at John Pennekamp State Park.
12:30 Swimming, nature trails, and tour of information center.
1:30 Return to Orvis Schoolroom.
2:00 Travel to Orvis Casting Grounds for casting practice.
3:00 Fly tying.
4:00 End of second day.

Wednesday


Time Activity & Description
9:00 am Kayak and ecological tour of mangroves at Ocean Reef Club.
11:00 Fly tying.
12:00 pm Lunch at Orvis Schoolroom.
1:00

Classroom presentation - Video analysis.

1:30 Travel to Orvis Casting Grounds for a demonstration on the Orvis Progressive Method to Fly Casting, Part 3: The Double Haul. Demonstration on techniques for casting in windy conditions; participants casting.
2:15 Classroom presentation – Fly selection: Saltwater food forms and their imitations. Tips on how to handle, photograph, and release fish. Demonstration on hook-setting and fish fighting techniques.
3:00 Prepare for flats trip. Boat etiquette, line management, quick casts.
4:00 End of third day.

Thursday


Time Activity & Description
8:00 am Bonefish Group – Meet at Orvis Store for fly fishing trip with the reef- boat charter captains.
Tarpon Group – Meet at Orvis Store for fly fishing trip with the flats skiff charter captains.
12:00 pm Lunch at Orvis Schoolroom.
1:00 Fly tying session (all participants).
2:00 Travel to Orvis Casting Grounds and fly cast on the Orvis Casting Challenge Course (all participants).
3:00 Preparation for flats trip. Line management, clothing, wading safety.
4:00 End of fourth day.

Friday


Time Activity & Description
8:00 am Bonefish Group – Meet at Orvis Store for fly fishing trip with the flats skiff charter captains.
Tarpon Group – Meet at Orvis Store for fly fishing trip with the reef-boat charter captains.
12:00 Lunch at Orvis Schoolroom.
1:00 Travel to local flat for wade fishing trip.
3:30 Return to Orvis Schoolroom for closing statements and gradution certificates.
4:00 End of day camp.
