A Sportsman's Life

by Leigh H. Perkins

Details

When Leigh Perkins purchased The Orvis Company in 1965, annual sales were $500,000. Today, the company is a $200—million—a—year business. This autobiography, written by Leigh along with author Geoffrey Norman, is an often funny, occasionally philosophical, and anecdote-laden story of an incredible man and the success he achieved by combining his passion for the sporting life with his talent for business. A Sportsman's Life has met with critical acclaim in the New York Times, and has been featured in the Wall Street Journal and USA Today. It is truly a great read. Hardcover.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Enjoyable Read I've been purchasing products from Orvis since the early 80's and still have some of them, now well used. Great quality & customer service! Now I understand why the company has great quality products, continues to have them to this day and is still going strong. Thank you Mr. Perkins for your vision with Orvis. I enjoyed reading how it all came together.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Live the Life! I came across this and never wrote a review on the book... have had my 'first edition" for years... and from time to time I enjoy re-reading it. It is inspiring to hear a man talk about his success as well as his not-so-successful ventures... his ability to intermix sporting passions and business have pushed me to do the same... When my local Orvis store opened, I sent mine to LHP with a note asking if he would sign it... I got a lot more - he was very gracious ... and I treasure it. Buy it for yourself or your favorite sportsman!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Life in Balance I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend who happens to work for Orvis. What a great review of a passion for quality. Leigh Perkins accomplished what we all start out to do - he combined his personal passion with a business commitment to unsurpassed customer service and products. This is a must read for anyone who loves the outdoors and believes life balance is or should be achievable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A GREAT AMERICAN SUCCESS STORY This book was well written and really gave a complete history of Mr. Perkins on a personal and business level. With so much gloom in our economy today it was a pleasure to read how this true American company grew to what it represents today. No cooking of the books or excuses just straight forward decisions that were not only made for the best interest of Orvis, but more importantly the customers that Mr. Perkins seems to cherish. This was my favorite gift on Christmas until I opened the Helios 12wt my wife surprised me with. Can you blame me??

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well written and interesting This is a great read if you have any interest in the history of the Orvis Company or the sporting goods industry. The book is a biography of Leigh Perkins, but tells as much about the Orvis Company as it does about Mr. Perkins. I also read a similar book about the founders of Cabela's and this one is much better because you get insight into the real struggles of that Leigh had to deal with such as the US government's former ban on importing Chinese bamboo used in fly rods.

Read about a life spent fishing, hunting, and running the Orvis Company

Leigh H. Perkins

From fishing for bluegill as a child, to hunting big game in India, Morocco, and Scotland, Orvis Chairman Leigh Perkins has dedicated his life to outdoor sporting pursuits. His passion extends well beyond mere participation, however; Perkins has been one of the sporting life’s great ambassadors, sharing his passion with everyone within reach, from working people to presidents.

Perkins combined his love of sport with a sharp mind for business when he purchased The Orvis Company in 1965, taking the highly respected, albeit small, business from $500,000 in annual sales to nearly $100 million annually when he chose to retire in 1992. Under Perkins’ guidance, The Orvis Company, once a niche fly-fishing outfitter, became a mail order powerhouse and the destination for people the world over seeking the distinctive country lifestyle. Despite wildly successful forays into apparel, home furnishings, and gifts, The Orvis Company has never forsaken its roots in fly fishing, and remains at the forefront of innovation in the sport.

Although Leigh Perkins passed the daily running of The Orvis Company on to his sons Perk and Dave Perkins more than ten years ago, he remains Chairman of The Orvis Company and still manages to log nearly 300 days of hunting and fishing a year.
