Murphy's Pub Jacket

You'll love the distinctive styling of our men's soft wool coat.

A handsome cut and classic, soft Donegal wool make this jacket as timeless as the public house that inspired it. The bi-swing back and ultrabreathable power-mesh-lined body provide an easy fit; acetate-lined sleeves allow easy on-and-off. Faux-suede elbow patches for long wear, as well as faux-suede trim beneath the collar. Three-button front. Four flap-closed exterior pockets. In brown mix. Pure wool. Dry clean. Imported.
Sizes: L(42-44); about 32¼" long in size large.

    Splendid tweed - 1/21/2015

I really like this coat. Well tailored of Donegal tweed. You may try the Large size than an XL as the cut is quite ample. A nice brown color.

    Quality slipping? - 12/20/2014
    By: from Savannah, GA

I bought a second MPJ because I saw them on sale and wanted one I could keep at our southern residence. This first, purchased five years ago, is of superior fabric. Both are a good fit, look great, etc. But I would recommend the newer version only when it is on sale, definitely not worth the regular price. It is rather depressing to notice quality slippage at Orvis. Where can people buy good clothing when this happens?

    Great coat - 12/5/2014
    By: from Washington DC

I love this coat and I enjoy wearing it. It is definitely distinctive. The fit is snug as a pub coat should be so unless you have a trim build it maybe good to get a size larger. The one caution I have is to take it to a dry cleaner who knows what they are doing. At high temperatures the elbow patches could be damaged. Bring this to the attention of the dry cleaner. Otherwise the wool fabric is excellent and the coat looks great.

Falls short of the mark this time - 9/8/2014

I usually love Orvis products and especially their woolens. However, the Murphy's Pub Jacket has something of an identity crisis. It can't decide if it's a sport coat, fall/spring jacket, or shooting jacket. I was hoping for a fall/spring jacket; however, it is quite lightweight and not really suitable for any layering. I would say it falls more into the category of sport coat but it really wasn't styled appropriately for that designation either. The bi-swing back is somewhat reminiscent of a shooting jacket but in this jacket it just appears billowy and puffy--not a good look. Ironically, the Murphy's Pub Donegal tweed is not not made in Ireland; at this price, one would expect that it is. (Also, why faux suede elbow patch? For this price, why not the real thing?) The throat latch is poorly positioned so that you nearly strangle yourself trying to button it. As other reviewers have mentioned, there is no inside pocket which is most unusual for jackets across the spectrum these days. Bottom line: This was an interesting concept that ultimately fell short.

    Unique - 7/4/2014

It is cut very big but that's to be expected in most Orvis clothes. It just didn't look as great at home as I thought it would. The XL Drapes on me bigger than I hoped. That being said, I kept it because I do think it will be a unique fall/winter coat and will look good on sweaters like the picture. maybe I like the more slim fit look.

    Nice look - 5/27/2014
    By: from Az

The jacket is sharp looking. I agree with other reviewers that it needs inside pockets. If I hadn't got it on sale, i would have sent it back . But, for the price it appears to be well made and has a nice feel about it.

Couldn't wait to purchase this on sale! - 2/6/2014
    By: from California

So after two years of waiting to purchase this coat, I finally bought it! I am very happy with the fit (I am a 48R) and the XL fits nicely, A true XL. It has enough room to layer, and the inner lining helps with getting the sleeves on and off. It is fairly light weight, so if you are worried about it being too bulky, it won't be a problem.

    Like a Norfolk Jacket - 1/16/2014
    By: from East Hampton, NY

I have been looking for a Norfolk for a long time, this is more like a 1/2 Norfolk, (belted in back only). A nice compromise between a hunting coat and a casual jacket. wearable indoors and out, cut well for layering. Love the classic look, and the feel. Buttons are well secured, throat latch doesn't reach - clearly a button needs to be moved. Overall, I actually love it.

    Not What I'd Hoped... - 1/29/2013
    By: from Texas

It's a nice product, just not what I'd hoped for, or expected to recieve when I ordered it. I returned mine to a retail store in Dallas without any issues. The sleeves run fairly long, and tailoring them would have been a pain. The construction of the jacket was not as heavy as I'd hoped... that coupled with the fact that I thought it would be a Herringbone tweed based on the photographs on the website led me to decide to return the product. I'm thinking of trying the Traveler's herringbone jacket instead... If they offered it in corduroy again, I'd have to think twice about altering the sleeves... Great style, execution of details lacking...

    Awesome Jacket - 7/17/2012

This jacket is unique and stands out from the crowd. I have never had another jacket that resulted in so many compliments and questions from people wanting to know where I bought it. This jacket fits perfect and is great for mildly cool to cold temperatures. I find adding a sweater under it makes it great for almost all winter wear. I highly recommend this jacket.
