    Great hat - 10/21/2014
    By: from bossier city, la

Actually the third one I purchased--lost the first one in the East River in the Big Apple. Gave the second one to my grandsonl Good looking, holds up well, and can be folded for traveling. And not as big as some that over-shadow your face

    Totally misrepresented - 8/21/2014

Hat only had vague resemblance to product described. Was more like a boller. When folding brim to look like a Fedora the hat looked stupid. Was returned. With high price and high cost of shipping I will not be purchasing from Orvis again.

5 years and still going strong - 8/17/2014
    By:

I purchased this hat in Manchester VT when I was at a car show, and had left my Panama home. 5 years later it is still going strong. I have worn it in an open car on the highway, I drive a convertible weather permitting, and really like the chin strap, It does not pack as easily as the ad would have you believe, but by placing it in the top of a duffle and stuffing the crown with clothing it survives remarkably well.My original, genuine panama made in Guatemala, suffered from a crack in the crown a few years ago and this hat is now worn all summer. It still retains its new hat looks. I will buy another if this one ever wears out.

One of the best purchases - 7/30/2014
    By: from Bristol, CT

When I received this hat it became immediately apparent that this was just what I was looking for. The color and weave of the hat was great. Did not know that it came with a tie under the neck, which snaps perfectly to be out of the way. The ribbon band is adjustable so that the hat may be tightened. Size was right on, and of course being able to pack this hat for traveling is the best. You can't damage when rolling it up to fit in your suitcase. Wonderful

Not the hat it used to be - 7/17/2014
    By: from Colorado, USA

I bought one of these two years ago and loved it. It was the best hat I ever had and I received many compliments and inquiries about it. I lost the hat recently to an angry sea and replaced it with the current model, which is very disappointing. The material is the same, but the new model (NOT as pictured on the website!) actually has a wider and more "belled" brim, and it now looks more like a Chinese rice paddy hat than a fedora. I'm supposing that the manufacturer had to add more belling to keep the wider brim from flapping in the wind, however in doing so, they lost the aesthetic sense of the "fedora" style. The hat is functionally the same, but I'm disappointed by the wider brim and the excessive belling. I bought two new ones, and I'm returning one (and keeping the other because I've already worn it.). Don't trust the photo on the website; it's an old photo and the brim on the hat you actually get is unnecessarily wider, more curved (belled) and the fedora look is now gone except in the most rudimentary sense.

    Great packable hat - 7/15/2014

Hat "crushes" and packs easily. Brim returns to original condition in a few hours. Lightweight, feels good, looks great. Perfect warm weather hat for those of us that are thinning up top and need stylish protection.

Find your hat size easily!

How to measure for a hatHere’s how you can find your correct hat size quickly and easily: Using a cloth measuring tape, measure around your head at the point at which your hat normally rides (approximately 1” above your ear). Pull the tape tightly enough to get an accurate measurement, but do not pull it too tightly. If your measurement is between two hat sizes, order the larger size.

Your hat should fit securely, but not tightly—if you shake your head back and forth vigorously, the hat should stay put. The same goes for bending forward: if you bend down, your hat shouldn’t slip off. Make sure, though, that your hat doesn’t bind or pinch. If it does, we recommend you exchange it for the next larger size.

Your hat will break in with wear. Over time, your hat will conform to the unique shape of your head, creating a one-of-a-kind fit. With proper care, your hat will provide many years of faithful service.

Packing Light

Packing tips from Dave Parker of Orvis Travel

Dave Parker of Orvis Travel gives tips on packing light.
Dave Parker of Orvis Travel gives tips for packing light.

Here at Orvis, we put our travel clothing and luggage to the real-life test every day. Our Orvis Travel staff and product developers log thousands of miles a year to bring you the very best, most authentic travel experiences and gear.

With new airline regulations and fees, it’s more important than ever to pack wisely. We asked our own Dave Parker -- Managing Director of our in-house travel agency – for tips on how to pack to ensure you get the most out of your travels:

  1. Cotton/synthetic-blend fabrics are easy to wash and dry on the road.  If laundry service is a given, our pure cotton wrinkle-free shirts are a great choice for travel too. If you pack enough shirts for three days, you have enough for a week.  Also, plan to buy a shirt or two at your destination. It's one way to take home a practical souvenir.
  2. Choose a bag made of ballistic nylon cloth. They are strong, yet light in weight. If you start with a heavy bag, it's all downhill from there.
  3. Think about color schemes when you pack. Make sure everything you bring is in the same palette, so it all matches.
  4. Think layers. Instead of a single heavy jacket, for example, take light layers that can be added and subtracted according to the weather. For cool climes, take a base layer of merino wool, then a synthetic/cotton-blend shirt, a fleece vest, and then an outer layer shell to stop rain and wind.  For cold climates, use a warmer base layer and a thicker fleece with long sleeves.
  5. Ship ahead. It sounds extravagant, but if you're going to a single place where you need a lot of gear (e.g., waders, fly rods, skis, etc.), it’s wise to ship it. The parcel services all have good tracking systems, and you'll know where your bag is ahead of time. (I'm doing this for an Alaska trip in August. Who wants to carry waders?)
  6. Think ounces. Take the smallest container/amount of toiletries possible, especially if you can replenish at your destination. There’s no need to take 16 oz. of shampoo for a one-week trip. Get a couple of small, refillable plastic bottles, and fill them at home before you go.
  7. Stay organized. Use nylon bags or large, clear freezer bags to compartmentalize. Put all the socks in one bag, etc. Knowing what you have helps you avoid over-packing.
  8. Download a book to your mp3 player.
  9. Unless you're a professional photographer, take the smallest digital camera you can. The picture quality will still be excellent.
  10. Wear your biggest/heaviest shoes on the plane and pack the lighter ones.
  11. Don't forget to ask about rental gear before you pack. Some fishing lodges have everything you need, especially if they're Orvis-endorsed.
