I returned the Safari Shorts immediately. The waist sizing was too small despite ordering my normal 34". However, the general quality of the garment appeared to be very good and a rweasonable purchase...if one gets lucky with the sizing.
Great Quality -

Very nice finish and weight. Light the additional finish in the rear end, and the overall fit.
I bought six pairs ... -
By far the best shorts I've ever owned. Spend a lot of time gardening, therefore bending over and squatting, and so the bottom tends to rip out of shorts. The reinforced bottoms of these hold their own, cargo pockets are roomy enough to hold an external flash unit for my camera when I'm on location. They clean up amazingly well, stand up to repeated washings, and as long as you don't mind looking like you're about to go on safari, look great.
Good style and fit - More Colors -

After some additional tailoring in order to make these well-designed shorts fit to my particular style (i.e., to shorten their length down to a 7" inseam, as 9" is way too long), they feel, look and wear great. SUGGESTION TO COMPANY: Offer some additional colors such as olive and black. They will sell as good as the khaki, and consider making the inseam 7" and not 9".
Safari Shorts -

Tough rugged material, just what you want when out in the wilds. Double thickness seat provides comfort whilst travelling over rough terrain on a 4X4 or when sitting up on a machan or in a hide. Highly recommended.
OUTSTANDING ! -

The quality and construction was something I've grown to expect from Orvis products. Absolutely "top notch" in every way. The company is a pleasure to deal with.
Well Constructed -

I like these shorts in that there is room for all the various things I need to carry when on vacation. They have an upscale appearance. One difficulty I've found was the ease of entering and exiting the two front button pockets. Difficult to use for things, such as change, where frequent access is needed. I like the back pocket button/velcro closing feature.

Let me say outright - these are the best, most functional, best designed and most comfortable shorts I have ever bought. I have worn them in the UK, in the South of France, in Marrakesh and on safari in Kenya and they fitted in everywhere. Congratulations. Highly, highly recommended.
Comfortable cut for those with muscles -
By: from USA
Viewed shorts online and after instant message discussion with helpful Orvis teammate about product features, placed an order. These shorts fit true-to-size, have an adequate inseam, and generous cut. For those who lift weights, ride bicycles, ski, or engage in any activity that creates strong legs, these shorts provide plenty of room. No uncomfortable taut fabric across the seat and/or thighs with this garment. Speaking of the seat, this model features a double-thick layer of fabric, so they'll likely wear for a good, long, time. They are a bit pricey, yet like many things, one gets what they pay for in this world. The fabric looks crisp, the wide loops can accomodate virtually any belt, and the construction looks built to last. I'll turn to new pairs of these shorts each season that Orvis continues to offer them.
Bad Experience So Far -
Purchased four pairs in Size 40. Each had an actual 42" waistband measurement. Wore one of them. Would slip down unless belt was tightened to an uncomfortable setting. Washing didn't change the situation. No shrinkage; a plus if the size were originally correct. Contacted Orvis by phone. Assured problem would be resolved. Merchandise staff would be instructed to sort through individual items of inventory using a tape measure until four pairs with a 40" waistband are located. I was to expect a call within 24 to 48 hours with the results. Three days later a message arrives on my answering machine. Caller clearly doesn't understand the instructions; or they weren't communicated effectively. Message contained nothing about any search. A comment that there are size variations with this product. Another indicating that waist measurement had been confused with inseams. Phoned Orvis again the next day. Different agent. No record in file about by initial call. Necessary to repeat all the details. Assured that merchandise staff would be properly instructed. I'd be called within 24 hours. I hope so. This is an excellent item. Reason I'm enduring this painfully frustrating arduous process. Otherwise I'd return the item and be done with it. Another point. I hate velcro. Its rip/tear kind of sound when it's unfastened. Its abrasive feel. These shorts have buttons on the back pockets. Ever hear of faux button-through pockets. This is it! Concealed under each pocket flap are velcro patches. The buttons are non-functional. Sort of like putting a Mercedes hood ornament on a Hundai. In my opinion these cargo shorts are the best on the market. But for the price we should be entitled to accurate sizing and button-through pockets.
