You own different rods and reels for particular types of fishing, so why not different sunglasses? After your rod and reel, your sunglasses are the one piece of gear that can make a real difference between a good day and a fantastic day. That's why Tri-Spectrum polarized sunglasses come in three lens colors: brown for everyday and deep-water angling; rose for spring creek and flats fishing; and copper for freestone fishing and fast-changing light conditions. Think lens color doesn't matter? Consider that rose lenses let you see bonefish on the flats or a big brown trout on spring creeks far better than any other color because of the way they accent blue and green colors. You see more fish and you see them sooner. That means more shots. Period.

Same holds true with copper lenses on freestone streams. They pick up trout in that kind of cover better than do the rose glasses. But the reason the different colors make such a big difference is because Tri-Spectrums are the best angling sunglasses made, period. Unlike most sunglass lenses, Tri-Spectrum lenses are true de-centered lenses of prescription glass quality. Each lens is ground and polished from a solid block of minerals for consistency of quality and for far less distortion and greater peripheral vision than with other sunglass lenses.

The lenses transmit more light at the three bands of primary colors so the contrast between each color is sharper and clearer for the utmost definition at the edges of object and improved ability to distinguish fish from objects underwater. And the lenses are set into the Italian-made frames to all but eliminate lenses popping out. Midway style tortoise frame now with new blue mirror coating to further reduce glare. Advantages of Tri-Spectrum Sunglasses

  • By enhancing light levels in the primary colors, contrast enhancement throughout the spectrum, not just in the blue area.
  • The blue light that is enhanced at the lower end is the part of blue light that does not blur—the light blue part is blocked.
  • We see contrast by seeing the edges of color changes—the Tri-Spectrum lenses give you three of these areas, not just one.
  • Works like sharpening of a digital picture, where adjacent pixels are darkened and lightened where there is a strong color gradient.
  • There is no other lens like this on the market, and this patented process is an Orvis exclusive for North America.
  • Hot coat AR coating that is permanent. Many lenses are cold-coated, which wears off quickly. No polarized lens can perform up to its full potential without superior AR coatings.
  • Decentered lenses so there is no distortion when using 8-base (wrap) lenses. Not all lenses sold today are decentered—only the best ones.
  • Superior Smudge Block hydrophobic coating, which not only beads off water, it lessens salt stains and any oil or salt is easily wiped off with any old cloth—no fresh water needed to clean lenses.
  • Optical quality glass lenses won’t distort with changes in temperature.

Dave Perkins, Vice Chairman, The Orvis Company, on HVO Tri-Spectrum Sunglasses

“Our new HVO Tri-Spectrum polarized fishing sunglasses are the best sunglasses for fishing I’ve ever worn, and I’ve worn a lot. They’re the only sunglasses made exclusively for fishing, and are exclusive to Orvis. When I first wore them, I couldn’t believe how well they worked. They worked so well I compared them to all my other glasses, literally standing near the water and finding an object, hopefully a fish, and swapping out several glasses to see the difference compared to Tri-Spectrums. Every time, I was able to see more beneath the water’s surface, with more clarity and better contrast than with any glasses I’d ever tried.”

Tim Wade, Owner/Outfitter, North Fork Anglers, Cody, WY

I am more than impressed with the visual clarity and fish 'spotting' capabilities the new Tri Spectrum sunglasses provide for me. I have worn Maui Jim, Revo, Smith, and some other so-called quality sunglass companies, but I have not seen the glasses perform as well as the mfg'ers stated.

Tri Spectrum sunglasses by Orvis do perform as stated. My first wearing was on the North Fork of the Shoshone when the river was going spate from runoff. I saw rocks, even trout, in water that 'normal' polarized sunglasses wouldn't allow me to see a foot into the water when in that condition. Since then, I have used them on the Bighorn and the lower Shoshone Rivers with the same amazing results.

Wading is easier. Spotting fish is easier. Fly location is superb. I can't wear them to sleep, but if I did, I am sure I would see things in my dreams that otherwise couldn't be seen!

Great job, Orvis. And, thanks, Dave Perkins and Mike Clough, for letting me be one of the first to try these sunglasses. It takes no effort to brag on something that has raised the bar and created the next generation of sunglasses.

Pat Dorsey, Guide, Blue Quill Angler, Evergreen, CO

I cannot overemphasize the importance of good eyewear. A quality pair of wraparound polarized glasses is critical for sight nymphing. A good pair with glass lenses isn’t cheap, but it’s well worth the investment. This purchase often merges the gap between success and failure. Encourage your fly-fishing companions to try the new Orvis HVO Tri Spectrum polarized sunglasses; I was one of Orvis’ field-testers for them, and they are truly amazing.
