    Awesome Experience!!! - 7/22/2014
    By: from Hot Springs, VA

As a new angler, I was excited at the opportunity to expand my knowledge and I wasn't disappointed. The classroom instruction by Matt Thomas was fantastic (I will always remember the "sushi conveyor") and the on-stream instruction by Donald Essex was equally great. In two days this course expanded my knowledge more than months of reading books on my own could, and I have already been putting what I learned to use! The pics are from a recent Project Healing Waters outing and me getting an award for "Biggest Fish"! Thanks guys! If you're thinking of taking an Orvis course 2 day course...don't hesitate!!!

    What a great place - 10/24/2011
By: from Hot Springs, VA (The Homestead)

Great instructors with a lot of knowledge. Mostly classrom instruction, but if you're a real beginner, it's excellent. All equipment is provided and we spent 3-4 hours casing on the lawn at the Homestead. I'd add one more day to the class, strictly for fishing. We spent a total of 3 hours in the water at the end of day 2. The Homestead is great and the staff is wonderful.

    A wet weekend in Virginia - 4/18/2011
    By: from DC

When my wife chose my Christmas present (a weekend of fly fishing tuition with the Orvis guys at the Homestead) she didn't know it was going to be the wettest weekend of the year. Or, at least, I hope she didn't. Despite the rain, this was a brilliant course, and the teaching was of an exceptionally high standard. I had fly fished 10 or so times before, with varying degrees of failure, but this course ironed out plenty of mistakes, taught me a bundle, and has given me the enthusiasm and confidence to fish more. First, the Orvis course content is very interesting and presented in an engaging way. It was very easy to understand and learn, especially with one on one tuition. But much more importantly than the content, it was the people who made this a really memorable weekend. We had Wit and James teach us, and I only have good things to say about both of them. Both are a credit both to the hotel and to Orvis (as indeed were the other guys we saw: Donald and another James). Knowledgeable, patient, amusing and skilled, they were both exceptional teachers. Top quality weekend with top quality people. If you get the chance, go down and spend some time with them.

    A very good idea - 6/8/2010
    By:

We stayed at the Homestead in June specifically to take the fly fishing school. Our instructors were Steve Demma, and James Deboe. Both were knowledgeable, patient, and amazing. I can not recommend the experience enough. I had been on fly fishing trips with guides before and caught fish, but after this class i feel confident in my abilities and competent and prepard to tackle fly fishing on my own. Jim in the fly shop was awesome too.

Everything we hoped for! - 4/20/2010
    By: from Allentown PA

My two adult sons and I attended the Orvis class on April 17 & 18th, 2010. We learned a lot, had a great time, and my sons caught their first trout (and then some!) on a fly rod! Orvis provided everything, as well as two top notch instructors. Steve and James were our instructors and they were extremely knowledgeable, proficient, and patient. They also were experts at being able to communicate their knowledge and convey their skills in such a way that everyone learned and had fun in the process. It appeared that all students in attendance felt very comfortable with these gentlemen, and the student to instructor ratio was low, as it should be. After instruction, we fished in a quite pristeen stream in a beautiful area, and enjoyed the fruits of our learning. Thank you, Steve, and thank you, James. We would recommend this course at this location highly!

    Hooked for life - 11/2/2007
    By: from Franklin, VA

While staying at the homestead with my wife, I decided to take a fly fishing class with James DeBoe. The instruction was top-notch and I woudl recommend James to anybody. He is a very good teacher and patiently walked me through the basics of fly casting . We then moved to the stream and started fishing. We did not leave until he made sure I caught a Trout. I think I am hooked (pun intended) for life.
