Doesn't get any better -
My son and I floated the Bitterroot with Jim the end of March. I've done a fair number of float trips over the years and Jim is as good as it gets. It really couldn't have been any better. Knowledgeable, helpful and patient.Overall a fun guy to fish with. Looking forward to doing another trip with him.
An amazing day! -

My girlfriend and I had a plan for a week's vacation in Yellowstone, until I hit the jackpot and won a day's float float with Jim thru a Trout Unlimited Raffle. Jim generously donated a full day float on the Bitterroot to a regional TU chapter and I hit what I consider to be the prize of a lifetime, I never win these things. So, our plans changed. Our week in Yellowstone was changed to a half week in the Bitterroot Valley and the other half in Yellowstone. We were there in mid-September and had an icredible day floating a portion of the West Branch, then on down to Darby with Jim. He's very knowledgeable about the river, put us where we needed to be and had us into fish from the time he picked us up until the take out as the sun was setting. He stayed in tune with the river, switching up our rigs throughout the day and even introduced us to the Tenkara style, which Jill took a liking too! Anyways, can't say enough good things about our float, it was above and beyond our expectations; from the fishing, to the local lore and the tasty streamside lunch, Jim is one heck of a guide and I'd recommend him to anyone. Good Times!

Caught my first fish!! Now I'm hooked! I wasn't even sure I could hold a fish let alone catch one. I had the most fun I've had in years! Who knew fishing was so exciting? Jim also introduced me to Tenkara. I have a compromised right arm so switching to the lighter weight rod allowed me to keep fishing even when my arm was too tired to use my fly rod. Anyone who loves to fish & wants to introduce that love to a hesitant partner Jim will make sure you both have the time of your life!
Great Guide Great Fishing -
We had the pleasure to fish with Jim Mitchell in July 2014. We had two great fun and fish-filled days on the West Fork of the Bitterroot and the main Bitterroot Rivers. Flow was good and fishing was excellent. We caught Cutthroats, Rainbows, and Brown trout. Jim is an excellent guide. He knows how to read the water and put you where you need to be in order to have success catching fish. He provided all the flies as well as a very nice stream side lunch. We recommend Jim to all our friends who are looking for a great fishing trip in Western Montana.

Contacted Jim Mitchell and talked to him about a fishing trip. I made it clear that my wife and I were new to the sport of fly fishing. He assured me that it would be fine and made us feel comfortable so we booked the trip. Jim did a fantastic job of taking care of our hotel accommodations for the entire trip. Picked us up the first morning and made us feel at ease right away. He started with some simple instructions and terminology we would need to know. Thanks to Jim we are now fly fishermen for life. Jim has a great personality and is very patient. Throughout the three days he continued to teach and educate us in a very gentle way. The lunches were really nice and done with a personal touch. Jim answered all my wife's questions, which was a lot. He has great knowledge of the rivers and the surrounding towns. Jim's help did not end on the river, he helped us with the local eateries and sites. We are looking forward to our next trip with Jim and his company. I would highly recommend Jim and Montana Hunting and Fishing Outfitters to everyone. Jim will make it the experience of a lifetime.

Went fishing down the blackfoot with Jim and my son. We are new to western montana and fly fishing. Great trip. Great fun. Beautiful territory. Jim was a great guide. Good teacher. Patient and forgiving of losing lotsa tackle. But learned from it. Will do it again next year. Jim did a wonderful job.
Father/Son/Grandson Get-a-way -

I had planned a fishing trip with my two sons and grandson for almost a year. I visited with Jim Mitchell to book this trip on August 2, 2014 and explained how important this outing was to me and the boys, as we have so little time off together this needed to be a special day. Jim provided himself and fellow guide Justin and worked our way down the West Fork of the Bitterroot. My teenage grandson was new to fly fishing, so Jim guided our boat and within the first couple of hours he provided fly fishing instruction to my grandson. Justin put my sons on large fish and we all caught a good number. Jim provided a wonderful day for all of us, so much so, we want to make it an annual event with Jim and Montana Hunting and Fishing Adventures. My grandson is now a fly fisherman for life.
Jim does it again! -

My husband has fished with Jim many times, but this was my first. Jim was thorough and professional from the outset, scheduling our five-day trip including hotels. Having lived his entire life in the area, he was quite knowledgeable about the area: history, flora and fauna, hiking tips, etc. Each morning he arrived eager and excited to get us on the river. We caught cuts, browns, and rainbows on the Blackfoot and different sections of the Bitterroot. Our pleasure was Jim's only agenda as we started early and fished late each day. And lunch--what a treat! Jim accommodated our dietary needs in spectacular fashion. We'll be back!

I, along with my son and son-in-law, just returned from our 4th year to fish with Jim Mitchell. That alone should speak to what kind of experience we have had. Jim is just a great guy and guide. He is what you want a guide to be - organized, knowledgeable, patient, and fun. He knows where the fish are, and how to catch them. As is always the case, there are many variables in fishing and only a few of them are controllable. But you can count on Jim to work very hard to maximize your experience. If you plan to fish in Montana with a guide - Jim Mitchell is the only name you need to know.
