3 (or 6) Strands of Large Estaz, Ice Chenille, or Cactus Chenille, braided through out its entire length. The braid is made tighter going toward the tail to make a subtle taper. Tying thread is used secure the end of the braid via a whip finish
Tail
2mm or 3mm flat foam cut to the shape of a paddle or a curly tail. The tail is affixed over the braided material by a whip finish (similar to wrapping a rod guide)
Options
1
For a thicker body, 6 strands can be used rather than 3, they would simply need to be divided into three clumps for braiding.
2
Different colors of Estaz (or similar) can be braided for a multicolor fly. Once you are skilled with the technique you can change colors of specific strands of material by connecting different color pieces of Estaz together with an overhand knot. This will give you a "fire tail" effect.
3
A cone can be attached to the head of the fly for a different action, and for fishing in deeper water.
4
A mono weedguard can be used with a standard saltwater or bass bug hook as a substitute for the 249WA hook.
