Our midweight cotton moleskin trousers, slightly lighter in weight than our field moleskin pants for casual wear around town, sport the trademark brushed, suedelike hand and remain as tough as leather. Constructed in a venerable mill in England that has made the highest-quality moleskin in existence since 1901. Belt not included. Pure cotton. Dry clean. Imported of English fabric.
Even waist sizes 30-46. Cuffed up to 33" or plain finished up to 34" at no extra charge.

Inseaming Guidelines: Most Orvis pants are available custom hemmed to your inseam length. In addition, many of our pants can be plain finished or cuffed. Plain finished hems are cut for length, then folded under, creased, and sewn. When tailoring a cuffed hem, we create a 1 1/4” cuff at your request. Simply specify your preference when ordering.

How to Measure

Men's Sizing In all instances, hold tape firm and level, but not tight.
a. Head: Using a flexible/soft tape measure, start 1" above the ear. Follow around head staying 1" above the ear. This will give your most accurate reading. Then refer to the chart for size.
b. Neck Circumference: Wrap tape around to the base of your front neck and allow room for wearing comfort. OR measure the collar length of a favorite shirt.
c. Sleeve Length: From the center back of your neck with your arm slightly bent, follow the tape around to your wrist bone.
d. Chest: Wrap a tape measure evenly around the fullest part under your arms.
e. Waist: Wrap tape around your natural waistline, or where you actually wear your pants.
f. Seat/Hip: Standing with your feet together, measure around the fullest part of your hip (approx. 7-8" below the waist). Don’t forget to keep the tape level.
g. Inseam: Best taken from an existing pair of pants you like. Measure along the garment inseam from the crotch seam to the hem.
h. Glove Hand: Measure all the way around the flat part of your hand, excluding the thumb, and around the widest part at the knuckles. Use the chart above to convert this measurement in inches to your corresponding glove size.

Moleskin

The perennial favorite cool-weather fabric

Our mens English moleskin pants come prewashed for comfort. In 1976, Orvis was the first company to bring the popular British moleskin pants to the USA. That year, a fellow by the name of “Dig” Diggory of Cambrian Fly Fishers in Wales had insisted I take a look at pants made of this extraordinarily soft cotton fabric that possesses a felt-like hand, blocks wind, and endures hard, outdoor use.

Dig, an eccentric if ever there was one, called his moleskin pants “ratcatchers,” named for the 19th-century farmers who favored the pants for their toughness and comfort. These farmers used Jack Russell Terriers to catch rats around their grain bins, and often wagered to see how many rats would be caught. As the trend toward more casual attire grew, “ratcatchers” caught the eye of estate owners and sporting gentry. Soon, the pants acquired the up-market name of “Moleskin.”

How Orvis Moleskin is made

The soft, dense nap unique to moleskin fabric is achieved through a special process. Machines with multiple knifelike blades and brushing properties work the 2 ply cotton fabric to give moleskin its renowned hand and legendary durability. The mill, located in the England Midlands, provides and maintains the machines necessary to make moleskin to its original, authentic specifications.

When we introduced moleskin in 1976, they became a huge success. Today, they continue to be one of our most popular cool-weather pants. Moleskin fabric may have been popularized (and cheapened) by others along the way. But we have honored Dig and the heritage of this wonderful fabric by insisting it remain made to the original exacting quality specifications, by the same British mill that has been in existence since 1901. Our moleskin remains as rugged as ever to withstand the challenge of the land, with the comfort and soft hand fit for gentry.
