Blancaneaux Lodge, Belize

Overview

In the early 1980s, Francis Ford Coppola visited Belize, immediately fell in love with the location, and purchased the abandoned Blancaneaux Lodge. For more than a decade the tropical resort was used as a family retreat before Francis opened his tropical paradise to the public in 1993. Today, it's the perfect setting for a tropical adventure vacation with Orvis.

Tucked away in a pocket of the Maya Mountains, Blancaneaux Lodge is a 20-room luxury resort where waterfalls tumble into turquoise pools above the jungle canopy. Its remote mountain setting makes this Belize adventure lodge a perfect place to relax, rejuvenate and enjoy life's simple pleasures. Set high in the remote Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, Blancaneaux Lodge is a great base for adventure activities. Guests can also explore the ancient civilization of the Maya, which still endures in the sacred sites throughout this magical region. From the ceremonial caves along the white-water rivers of the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve to stalactite caverns and the vast ruins of Caracol deep within the lush rainforest, Blancaneaux is your window into the world of natural and archaeological wonders.

From hiking to horseback riding, there's something for everyone in this adventure vacation package. Experience the best that Belize has to offer with our trip package to the Blancaneux Lodge luxury resort.

Activities

Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve

Take in the most scenic sites nearby the Blancaneaux Lodge, as well as some of the least visited, in this unique and eye-opening tour.

The first stop is the viewpoint to Hidden Valley Falls (or 1000 foot Falls), which thunder over a granite ledge into the mists below. Traveling deeper into the reserve you come to Cooma Cairn – one of the highest accessible areas in Belize - for a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains. You then visit the Rio Frio Cave, an ancient Maya burial site with an enormous arched entranceway. The Rio Frio (Cold River) flows in one end of this cave and out the other, helping to create smooth limestone walls and sharp stalactites. Also included in the full day tour is a stop at the Rio On Pools and Falls – a beautiful picnic spot and perfect for a cool dip in the refreshing water.

Caracol

Situated high on the Vaca Plateau deep in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, Caracol is the most extensive Mayan site in Belize and was only re-discovered in 1936. The site of Caracol covers over 80 square miles with 30,000 structures and at its peak supported a population of more than 150,000 people. Situated 1600 feet above sea level with no natural body of water nearby, it remains a mystery how such a huge population was able to survive there. At the heart of the site lies the massive pyramid of Caana (Sky Palace), which is now almost fully restored and reaches over 135 feet high. From the top you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views over the forest-clad mountains.

Barton Creek Cave

Explore a remote cave once used by the ancient Mayans as a burial site on this exciting canoe trip. Adorned with amazing stalactites and stalagmites, the guides tell stories of civilizations past as they use spotlights to point out Mayan pottery shards and remains in the depths below.

Horseback to Big Rock Falls

A gentle ride through the pine savanna and forest takes you to hidden falls. Take a break from the saddle and swim under a cascading waterfall. (Recommended for beginners or those who just want a short time in the saddle.)

Other activities are available and can be scheduled for this Belize adventure trip. These include the following: birding, other walks and hikes, and spa services at Waterfall Spa. There's something for everyone in our Belize adventure vacation package, call and reserve your spot today!

Lodging

The Lodge

Tucked into the remote mountains of western Belize, deep in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, the property overlooks the gentle rapids and shimmering waterfalls of Privassion Creek where the flora of both the jungle and pine forest intertwine in the stunning landscape. Riverfront cabanas: An expansive deck with wrap-around walkway ensures a spectacular view of Privassion Creek. Elegantly themed with native art and local textiles, each luxury resort cabaña offers a queen-size bed and hand-painted tile bath. They boast Japanese style showers, and décor from Belize, Guatemala, Mexico, and Spain. They are all open air, but are well screened. At night, you will hear the sounds of the tropics all around you, as if you were sleeping out in the middle of the jungle – and essentially you are!

Stone steps through the hillside gardens connect the cabanas, villas, and the main lodge. The main lodge houses the bar, dining room, gift shop, and reception area. There is no air-conditioning at Blancaneaux to filter out the humidity, but it is generally cooler in the mountains, and heat is rarely a problem.

The food at this Belize adventure lodge is as unique as the decor. Guests start their day with freshly squeezed orange juice, bread baked that morning and plates of fresh fruit. The Montagna Ristorante boasts one of the only wood-burning pizza ovens in the country, and Coppola imported an espresso machine for the fine Guatemalan coffee.

The menu at the Montagna Ristorante features many Coppola family recipes and proudly reflects his Italian heritage. Local chickens are home-smoked behind the restaurant, and virtually all the produce and fruit come from the large organic garden on the property, which you are welcome to tour. In addition to pizzas and pastas, there is a changing array of daily specials. Fresh fish from the coast also appears frequently on the menu. The intimate dining room sparkles from candlelight and is decorated with handmade wooden furnishings, colonial era antiques and Guatemalan fabrics. An open veranda offers moonlit views of Privassion Creek.

The pool-side Guatemaltecqua Restaurant features the cuisine of Peten and the Guatemalan Highlands.

    A True Getaway - 4/21/2011

Sometimes the middle of nowhere is the best place to be! Nestled in the pines and palms of western Belize, Blancaneaux Lodge was a destination by itself. I loved the simple and delicious food (much from the on-site organic garden), particularly the tiny Guatemaltecqua restaurant. Both the pool and the river provided refreshing dips after excursions, and the hot tub was perfect on a starry night. I highly recommend a treatment at the spa; the Thai massage was wonderful! My cabana was so cute, and the open-air style meant I could hear the waterfall constantly (although it also meant I could hear the chorus of cicadas at 5:30am)! The staff were amazing, and were truly dedicated to providing the best experience. The tours in this package (I did the 4-day option) were great, and my guides were fun and knowledgeable (though some other guests did say they had guides who were less personable). I went in March and it got up to 90 degrees in the sun, but little humidity, and the evenings were perfect. There were some biting bugs in the morning and early afternoon, but later in the day and in the evening, there were none. Maybe the only other thing to be aware of is that the lodge is really isolated, it's 18 miles on a bumpy dirt road, and there is nowhere to buy supplies if you forget anything (though I am sure the staff would figure out how to help). All in all, it was a great trip and it was over far too quickly! Orvis was wonderful in helping to plan for it, very clear and detailed, and Jodi was a big help when I had questions.
