Belcampo Lodge is really the only place in far southern Belize where you can explore the tropical forest or fly fish and enjoy luxurious accommodations and gourmet food. It is surrounded by tropical nature both on land and at sea. This Belize adventure lodge is situated on a hillside above the Rio Grande in a 12,000 acre private reserve, where you can observe tropical birds in the canopy, and adjacent to the Port of Honduras Marine Reserve, one of the best places in the world to catch permit on a fly rod.
Modeled after the private game lodges in southern Africa, Belcampo Lodge manages to provide luxury, service and excellent food without sacrificing an authentic natural experience. Lodging is in 12 large suites with luxurious baths, large verandas and floor to ceiling windows with views. Comprehensive conservation programs ensure ample populations of permit, snook and other fish in the surrounding waters, while monkeys, tapir and countless tropical bird species are spotted throughout the property. Belcampo’s miles of marked trails, nearby Mayan ruins, protected river kayaking and excursions to offshore islands provide plenty of activity in addition to fly fishing. For the senses and relaxation, there’s the Jabulani Spa with massages and more in a relaxing rainforest ambiance. The food is memorable, much of it fresh from the lodge’s own organic garden and inspired by the Mayan cuisine of Central America.
Belize bird watching is outstanding – 276 species were once recorded in a single day – and the lodge’s unique location high on a ridge above a river gives you a unique viewpoint. There’s tropical hardwood forest, mangroves, riparian, and saltwater habitat close to the lodge, making it one of the most interesting locations in Belize for birders. Like all the best birding locations, Belcampo Lodge has expert guides who will help you get the most out of your visit.
We highly recommend this Orvis endorsed lodge as the best of southern Belize, whether you’re seeking tropical nature, challenging fly fishing or an exotic escape. Orvis helps you find the best Belize trip packages around. Read our Belize adventure lodge reviews to learn more about Belcampo Lodge.

Belcampo Lodge has well organized activities and some of the best trained guides in Belize whether you’re going fly fishing or looking for trogons in the forest. There is always something to keep everyone as active as they choose during their stay at Belcampo Lodge. They have the best fly fishing guides in the area and you’ll need them to get a shot at the elusive permit that are found here. Bel Campo naturalist guides have been trained to the highest standards for interpreting the tropical forest, birds and marine life. You will find them friendly, informative and well organized. This Belize adventure tour has something for everyone.
The Gulf of Honduras is permit country and you may get more shots at a permit here in one day than anywhere else we know in the Caribbean. Permit are elusive, finicky and landing one is a challenge, even for expert anglers, which is why they are so highly regarded as one of the saltwater flat’s most coveted catch. Belcampo’s guides know permit fishing and will introduce you to the best waters each day throughout your Belize fly fishing experience.
There are also tarpon and bonefish in the region – tarpon are frequently seen rolling in the Rio Grande close to the lodge – and it’s possible to catch a grand slam (bonefish, tarpon and permit in the same day). Snook are found in the area too, and you may have a better chance of a hookup with one here than most places. However, permit are the stars and by far the most likely object of your fly fishing desire while staying at Belcampo Lodge.
Belcampo's most frequently targeted species:
A limited selection of fishing tackle is available for use at the lodge. We recommend that the experienced anglers bring their own tackle.
Conservation note: As of 2008, permit, tarpon and bonefish are catch-and-release only in Belize by law. Belcampo Lodge strongly supports this conservation effort and Belize’s pro-conservation policies.
Jabulani Spa’s hand-carved wooden water feature and rock fountain help bestow a sense of tranquility throughout the spa. The structure, which was inspired by traditional Maya homes, features Belizean hardwoods harvested from hurricane-damaged trees and sustainable wood farms. A covered outdoor terrace leads to a spacious treatment area with floor-to-ceiling glass walls offering an unrestricted view of the rainforest canopy. The spa’s interior walls are adorned with approximately 70,000 natural stones, which reflect the surrounding environment and complement the oversized waterfall shower.
Situated in the tranquil tropical forest, surrounded by sensuous scents and sounds, you can enjoy exotic treatments that incorporate rare, local, organically produced Belizean ingredients including Maya Moon Oil. Maya Moon Oil is traditionally used as healing oil for hair, skin and massage. It is made with essential oils which are prepared with 9 sacred herbs. These special ingredients are gathered on a full moon, after being prayed over according to the Mayan Tradition. Belcampo’s in-house spa therapist uses the local oil in her massages and also offers regionally inspired aromatherapies along with yoga, meditation and other wellness treatments.
