Permit Quest with Todd Calitri, June 2014

Overview

Join Orvis Travel Saltwater Expert Todd Calitri and a small group of anglers and their companions in southern Belize, and learn what it takes to catch the elusive and hard fighting permit. This part of Belize is arguably the best place in the world to catch a permit on a fly, and this fly fishing trip was put together to maximize your chances for success. This hosted permit fishing trip includes top notch Orvis equipment, fishing with experienced local guides, access to superb permit flats, and the expert coaching of an accomplished permit angler. Guests will be staying at Orvis Endorsed Belcampo Lodge in Belize, so even the most discriminating traveler is sure to enjoy the luxurious accommodations, personalized service and fine dining. Non-angling companions are encouraged to attend, and will have a wide variety of nature and cultural excursions to enjoy during their stay. The Belize fly fishing trip is limited to only 10 anglers, and their companions, so reserve your spot soon by calling Orvis Travel at 800-547-4322.

Belcampo Lodge is really the only place in far southern Belize where you can explore the tropical forest or fly fish and enjoy luxurious accommodations and gourmet food. It is surrounded by tropical nature both on land and at sea. This Belize adventure lodge is situated on a hillside above the Rio Grande in a 12,000 acre private reserve, where you can observe tropical birds in the canopy, and adjacent to the Port of Honduras Marine Reserve, one of the best places in the world to catch permit on a fly rod.

Modeled after the private game lodges in southern Africa, Belcampo Lodge manages to provide luxury, service and excellent food without sacrificing an authentic natural experience. Accommodations consist of 12 individual, privately sited suites with comfortable sleeping and relaxing spaces, screened fresh-air verandas, and luxurious spa-style baths. Comprehensive conservation programs ensure ample populations of permit, snook and other fish in the surrounding waters, while monkeys, tapir and countless tropical bird species are spotted throughout the property. Belcampo's miles of marked trails, nearby Mayan ruins, protected river kayaking and excursions to offshore islands provide plenty of activity in addition to fly fishing. For the senses and relaxation, there's the Jabulani Spa with massages and more in a relaxing rainforest ambiance. The food is memorable, much of it fresh from the lodge's own organic garden and draws daily inspiration from the stunning variety of tropical produce available and the strength of the local culture. Belcampo raises local breeds of hogs finished on fruits, vegetable scraps and sugar cane. They also pasture their own chickens and laying hens for eggs.

Belize bird watching is outstanding - 276 species were once recorded in a single day - and the lodge's unique location high on a ridge above a river gives you a unique viewpoint. There's tropical hardwood forest, mangroves, riparian, and saltwater habitat close to the lodge, making it one of the most interesting locations in Belize for birders. Like all the best birding locations, Belcampo Lodge has expert guides who will help you get the most out of your visit.

Activities

The Fly Fishing in Belize

Belcampo Lodge has a well-organized activities schedule and some of the best trained guides in Belize. There is always something to keep everyone as active as they choose during their stay at Belcampo Lodge. They have the best fly fishing guides in the area and you’ll need them to get a shot at the elusive permit that are found here. Belcampo guides have been trained to the highest standards for interpreting the tropical forest, birds and marine life. You will find them friendly, informative and well organized. This Belize adventure tour has something for everyone.

Fly Fishing

The Gulf of Honduras is permit country and you may get more shots at a permit here in one day than anywhere else we know in the Caribbean. Permit are elusive, finicky and landing one is a challenge, even for expert anglers, which is why they are so highly regarded as one of the saltwater flat’s most coveted catch. Belcampo’s guides know permit fishing and will introduce you to the best waters each day throughout your Belize fly fishing experience.

There are also tarpon and bonefish in the region – tarpon are frequently seen rolling in the Rio Grande close to the lodge – and it’s possible to catch a grand slam (bonefish, tarpon and permit in the same day). Snook are found in the area too, and you may have a better chance of a hookup with one here than most places. However, permit are the stars and by far the most likely object of your fly fishing desire while staying at Belcampo Lodge.

Belcampo’s most frequently targeted species:

  • Permit: The flats, lagoons and river channels around Belcampo are among the best permit fisheries in the world.  The largest fish are found from March through May, but ample numbers are found nearby year round.
  • Tarpon:   Large tarpon are migratory and are found in the waters around Belcampo from May through September.  Smaller tarpon, less than twenty pounds, can be found in the mangroves and brackish estuaries, creeks and lagoons year-round.
  • Bonefish: The flats, lagoons and river mouths attract bonefish, but not in the same numbers as in northern Belize.  We suggest you combine a stay at Belcampo Lodge with a fishing lodge to the north if you are new to flats fishing.
  • Snook:  Coastal marine and brackish mangroves offer the best snook fishing from November through March.
  • Jack Crevalle: Thriving in the area since the 1995 commercial net ban, large schools of jacks are found in the shallow flats and lagoons around Belcampo from February through November.
  • Mutton Snapper: This coveted species is found year-round in the sandy areas around mangroves, lagoons and river basins.

A limited selection of fishing tackle is available for use at the lodge. We recommend that the experienced anglers bring their own tackle.

Conservation note: as of 2008, permit, tarpon and bonefish are catch-and-release only in Belize by law. Belcampo Lodge strongly supports this conservation effort and Belize’s pro-conservation policies. Additionally, Belcampo Lodge has partnered with Bonefish & Tarpon Trust and the International Game Fishing Association (IGFA) to tag permit, in an effort to get a better understanding of their migration and spawning patterns. During your trip you may be able to participate in this exciting project by tagging your fish and recording information that will be used by scientists to help protect the fish and its habitat.

For more information about Bonefish & Tarpon Trust’s efforts to study and protect permit in southern Belize, please visit www.tarbone.org

The Complimentary Self-Guided Collection of on-site activities at Belcampo Lodge is available to every guest:

  • Bird Watching - Extensive habitat diversity surrounding Belcampo Lodge makes the lodge a birder’s paradise.  With a low human population density and active preservation activities, the area’s river banks, meadows, rainforests, cayes and swamps provide numerous hideouts for the more than 618 recorded species of birds found in Belize.  Serious and casual birders alike appreciate the lodge’s guide books, terraced bird friendly landscaping, marked trails and strategically placed viewing scopes and binoculars.  Belcampo offers a variety of ways birding can be combined with other activities, from canoeing and hiking or simply relaxing around the pool or on the veranda of the lodge.  Winter brings more than 200 visiting species from North America and summer sees many of the migratory birds from South America making this an area of interest for birdwatchers year-round.
  • Canoe Trips on the Rio Grande; it is not a difficult paddle either up or downstream.  Guests of Belcampo Lodge will be able to see various plants, animals, birds and sites of interest as they navigate their own canoes and kayaks on the river.  All equipment is provided, as well as instruction if needed.

  • On-site Hiking at Belcampo have a concentration on special interest topics, such as birding for beginners, rainforest animal identification and an introduction to medicinal plants.  During these Belize jungle tours, guests may visit a number of areas, including the lodge’s own pristine 12,000 acre reserve where wildlife and birds are plentiful.

    Permit Quest - 4/8/2013
    By: from Jackson Hole

I returned to Belcampo with my old buddy, Todd Calitri for Permit Quest 2013. I fished with a new friend I met last year at Belcampo and once again had a fantastic time. I caught this nice permit in the Lagoon on Palm Sunday.
