This is a 4 star, wilderness camping and fly fishing trip into Montana's most pristine, untouched mountain landscapes. The trip starts as you pack in on horseback up river for miles into the Wilderness, and float out on the South Fork of the Flathead River. Fly fish by day, camp each night and enjoy a campfire with stories under the stars on the banks of the South Fork of the Flathead River. This is truly the trip of a lifetime.
Only a handful of guided pack and float trips are allowed here each year and the outfitters abide by a permit system that protects this fragile ecosystem. Because of this, the dry fly fishing for wild and native Westslope cutthroats is some of the best in the lower 48 states. Not to mention it is one of the only places in the Western US where you can legally target, and fish to the native bull trout. Each year we reserve a week during some of the best weather and fishing, for a group of Orvis Travel guests.
"There are two aspects of Spotted Bear's Wilderness Fly Fishing Trip that make it the trip of a lifetime: 1) I can not think of a better way for a budding fly fisher to build enthusiasm, skill, and confidence in a sport that will give him/her a lifetime of pleasure; 2) I can not think of another trip that offers the unique variety of excellent fly fishing, wilderness rafting, heart-winning horse camaraderie, breathtaking wilderness scenery, hiking, and 4-star camping."

Plan your flight to arrive at Glacier/Kalispell airport any time during the day. From the airport you can take a taxi or a shuttle to the hotel of your choice. The hotel is not included in your package and you are free to stay wherever you choose. If you wish to take advantage of the group transfer included in your package, we suggest staying in Whitefish or Kalispell.
You’ll be picked up at your hotel in Whitefish or Kalispell around 6:00am and take a 2 hour drive to Spotted Bear Ranch. After arrival, the guides and packers will sort out our gear and send it off to the trailhead to be loaded onto mules while we enjoy breakfast. After a short transfer to the trailhead you will mount up and ride about 10 miles to Hodag or Damnation Creek.
You will arrive in time at camp for some fishing and introductions to the native cutthroat trout population.
Rise early and enjoy the Montana sunrise along with a breakfast around the campfire. Today is another ride into the backcountry, stopping in time to fish the late afternoon and evening on the White River.
After a hearty breakfast, you will have plenty of fishing options with your guide; wade fish the main river, hike and explore small tributaries with your guide. Plan to overnight on the White River and move the next day.
Break camp after breakfast each morning and float down the river by raft, stopping along the way to fish the best holes. Lunch will be on the river and the group will camp at different places on the banks of the South Fork of the Flathead each night.
After breakfast, the group floats and fishes their way to the takeout point. The packers meet you there and you can hike or ride the 2 miles back to Outfitters Roost. After a short drive back to Spotted Bear Ranch, you can clean up and enjoy a barbecue before heading back to your hotel. Your hotel is not included in your package.
After breakfast you can make your way to the airport or stay an extra day or two in the Glacier Area for more adventures on your own.
