Fish for salmon, big rainbow trout, and Dolly Varden in Alaska's famous Bristol Bay region.

Orvis Week at Alaska's Crystal Creek Lodge

Overview

Join us in Alaska's famous Bristol Bay region next summer for an opportunity to fish some of the most productive trout and salmon rivers in the world. We'll be staying at one of our favorite places, Crystal Creek Lodge, only 5 miles from King Salmon, Alaska on the banks of the Naknek River. Guests will enjoy daily fly-out fishing excursions, great food, and very comfortable modern accommodations.

Crystal Creek Lodge offers the whole package - world class fly fishing, a variety of outdoor adventures, a modern upscale lodge, and a cadre of expert guides.

Each of these special Alaska fly fishing trips will led by an Orvis Travel fly fishing expert, who will work with the friendly lodge staff and expert local guides to make sure everyone has a great experience. Browse our Crystal Creek Lodge reviews to read more about this Alaska fly fishing trip.

The Location

Crystal Creek Lodge is located just 5 miles from King Salmon Alaska, on the banks of the Naknek River, a destination fishery famous for salmon runs and trophy rainbow trout, just minutes from Bristol Bay. This area offers some of the world's best fly fishing for salmon and trout, and Crystal Creek Lodge is the area's best choice for discriminating anglers that want an authentic Alaskan experience, without having to "rough it."

Most guests overnight in Anchorage the night prior to flying to the lodge. You are free to stay anywhere you choose in Anchorage, and Orvis Travel will be happy to make some recommendations. There are regularly scheduled commuter flights from Anchorage to King Salmon, and Orvis Travel will help make a reservation. We recommend waiting to book your flights and make hotel arrangements until the commuter flight schedules and fares are announced in mid-January. Your Orvis package includes complimentary shuttle service from the King Salmon airport to the lodge.

The variety and abundance of trout and salmon in the region makes this Alaska fly fishing trip a perfect choice for anglers of all skill levels and interests. Late July and August provides opportunities for rainbow trout and silver salmon, as well as sockeye, pink and chum salmon, and the occasional Arctic Grayling.

Location is an important consideration when choosing a fly out camp in Alaska. Crystal Creek guests fly out daily in a fleet of immaculate DeHavilland Beaver sea planes to access wild and remote water teaming with fish, but the lodge's location and fleet of boats allows for a great angling experience, even on those rare days when the planes are grounded. Crystal Creek Lodge's close proximity to the airport in King Salmon means travel to and from the lodge isn't likely to be impacted by inclement weather, and you'll be able to bring more luggage than if you were traveling to a more remote lodge, requiring a flight in a small plane.

Itinerary

Itinerary at a Glance:

Day One:
Trophy Rainbow Trout or salmon fishing on the famous Naknek River:
Arrive to Crystal Creek Lodge early morning. After being shown your room and getting an orientation that includes being outfitted with premium Orvis waders and a rod and reel, your guide will take you to the Lodge dock to depart by boat to fish the Naknek River. The Naknek River is one of Alaska's great wild salmon factories. Over three MILLION Pacific Salmon migrate into the River from nearby Bristol Bay each summer. On their migration they pass right by the front door of Crystal Creek Lodge. Some of the world’s largest Rainbow Trout also live in the Naknek River.

Day Two:
Becharof National Wildlife Refuge:
Fly south about 60 miles to take a tour around Becharof Lake, the second largest lake in Alaska. Becharof Lake was created by the repeated scorings of massive glaciers over the course of several ice ages. Along the way, stop to visit a pristine river with raging rapids, walk the edge of a dormant volcanic crater, watch bears, caribou and other wildlife, see evidence of 10,000 years of human activity, witness the rugged Alaska Peninsula Mountain Range and fly fish a small stream teeming with Arctic Char and grayling.

Day Three:
Katmai National Park:
Fly east across lakes carved by glaciers over several ice ages and through the Alaska Peninsula Mountains, passing remnants of glaciers along the way. Land upon either a seaside beach or near an inland stream to witness Alaskan Brown Bears forage for salmon. The world famous Brooks River is very close by and is a possible landing destination. Pass by the steaming vent of a dormant volcano. Tour the incredible Valley of 10,000 Smokes, a gigantic moonscape created by a massive volcanic explosion in 1912. Numerous streams teeming with Rainbow Trout, char and grayling are within the Park. You may choose to spend all or part of your day fly fishing pristine waters.

Day Four:
Alaska Peninsula National Wildlife Refuge Walrus and Aniakchak National Monument:
Fly south across the eastern edge of Becharof NWR and the Alaska Peninsula NWR to land at Cape Senniavan, where you will walk to the edge of a herd of thousands of Pacific Walrus to watch them tossle, roar and bob in the surf. On the way home stop at a beach likely to produce antique Japanese glass fishing floats. Fly onward to Anikchak National Monument, a giant caldera three miles across that last exploded in 1933. If favorable conditions exist, land within the caldera or one of several landing strips outside.

Day Five:
Togiak National Wildlife Refuge and Togiak Eskimo Village Tour:
Fly west towards Bristol Bay. If the Bristol Bay commercial salmon fishing fleet is out fly overhead and watch the action as scores of fishing boats jockey for position to set nets and catch salmon. Pass by one or more abandoned canneries dating back to the late 1800's. From the air witness hundreds of white Beluga Whales as they work the tides for salmon. Fly onward across the magnificent coastline of the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge to land at Togiak Village, an authentic Yup’ik Eskimo village. Meet some of the residents of the Village and experience firsthand stories of their life and demonstrations of their ivory carving and other crafts.
