A unique resort in Patagonia near Torres del Paine National Park

"I highly recommend Remota to anyone who wants to explore the famous Torres del Paine, one of the most beautiful parks in the Andes, and it's the only resort lodge in the area that offers fly fishing." -Dave Parker, Managing Director, Orvis Travel

This is the hotel Pablo Neruda would design had he been something other than a poet writing odes about tomatoes, lemons and love. The striking building sits on a grassy hillside overlooking the water near Puerto Natales, just an hour or so south of Torres del Paine National Park. It's a perfect base to explore Paine: close enough for day trips but with better access to the fjords and lesser known mountains along the coast. The design of this Chile adventure lodge provides magnificent views everywhere, although the reason for going is the outdoors, and Chilean architect German del Sol has created a stylish basecamp in Patagonia that is also a comfortable refuge from the elements. Outstanding guided excursions are provided daily as part of the package price. Nowhere has the quality of guides improved so much in the last 10 years than in Chile, where the youthful guides seem as capable as Neruda at expressing their passion for the land in English or Spanish. You can hike, ride, mountain bike, watch birds, and explore Paine Park, then return to the coast for a swim in Remota's heated pool, enjoy a gourmet meal of local produce, seafood and lamb with delicious Chilean wines.

A stay at Remota combines well with fishing anywhere in Chile, especially the Nomads helifishing ship, Patagonia Sur Reserves, and Patagonia Baker Lodge. Fly to Punta Arenas and the Remota provides a transfer from the airport.

If you're fishing in Argentina, Remota combines well with Tierra del Fuego and the Rio Grande, or, if you are visiting El Calafate and the southern Andes. The Remota lodge provides transfers from and to El Calafate, which is the major airport for southern Argentina and the Glaciares National Park region.

While the Remota is a one hour drive from the park entrance there are many excursions to closer areas that are a surprise and delight. By all means make at least one excursion in the park to see the stunning mountains, but the advantage of Remota is the proximity of other destinations that are rarely visited, places where you can savor the vastness of Patagonia.

Excursions and Activities

Remota offers a wide range of guided excursions that are included in the package price along with your room and meals. Tours are done by 4x4 vehicle, horseback, bicycle, or kayaking or sailing the fjords, depending on your preference and the area visited. Here’s an overview of some of them:

Torres del Paine National Park

This is one of the premier parks in South America and known for dramatic scenery. It’s about an hour from Remota to the park boundary.

  • All day tour of the park by van. See the highlights of the park with time to take photos.
  • Mirado del Toro day hike. One of the most scenic hikes in the park. The trail takes you through beech forests and mountain lakes to a scenic overlook (“Mirador” in Spanish) where you have stunning vistas of the Torres del Paine Massif, Grey Glacier, and Toro Lake.
  • Base of the Torres day hike. This day hike ascends 2400 feet to a glacial morraine where you are rewarded with dramatic views of the high peaks. A great experience for strong hikers.
  • Kayaking among the glaciers. This trip includes a scenic two hour drive through the park to Grey Glacier, where trained guides take you paddling among the colorful icebergs.

Birding at Dos Lagunas

The birding is good throughout the region and these two lakes provide excellent viewing of the flying steamer duck and the yellow-billed pintail, buff-necked ibis, coots, southern widgeons, white-tufted grebes, great grebes, black-necked swans, coscoroba swans, oystercatchers, doves and flamingos. If we’re lucky, we’ll see condors, eagles and caracaras.

Horseback ride at Sierra Dorotea

Full day / horseback / medium difficulty / not a marked trail.

Sierra Dorotea is one of the most beautiful mountains in the region, with an extraordinary landscape where you can see mountains, the pampas, and the canals all from one viewpoint. It is a wonderful place to ride atop docile horses that are accustomed to difficult terrain. The ride is accompanied by a gaucho (also called a baquedano), who will share with guests a hot mate tea by a bonfire. The clothing, the character and culture of the gauchos offers guests a chance to understand life and work in sometimes inhospitable land.

Trekking and Horseback Ride through Sierra Dorotea

This is a more challenging hike and ride to a remote mountain range. This excursion begins with a walk for 3 hours to the mountain shoulder of Sierra Dorotea where, along with a lake, we meet a gaucho with horses. We then ride for 3 hours through beech forest and a high mountain valley. Good opportunity to see condors.

Puerto Natales by Bicycle

Enjoy and easy ride to the nearby port town, Puerto Natales. We begin at Puerto Bories, an old mutton processing plant constructed in 1915 and located on the shore of the fjord Última Esperanza. We then pedal through the area known as “Los Huertos,” where families cultivate vegetables and fruit in greenhouses. Later we visit a cemetery, the Fisherman’s pier, and the main plaza, spending a few hours with the people of Patagonia.

Fly fishing

Fish for brown trout on remote mountain streams that are rarely visited by outsiders. The Remota is not a traditional fly fishing lodge, but they have an excellent fishing guide who has access to private and public water relatively close to the lodge. It’s all walk and wading on small to medium size streams. Fly fishing is one of the excursions included in the package price. The lodge has some equipment suitable for the local waters, but it is limited.

Remota is a very good destination if you want to include a visit to Torres del Paine in a longer itinerary in Argentina and Chile, whether you are fly fishing or not. It's ideal if one member of your party wants to hike and explore the national park extensively and another prefers to fly fish.

Rooms and Amenities

Remota has 72 spacious rooms, all with views of Esperanza fiord. There is a heated pool, outdoor jacuzzis and sauna.

There's a dining room, bar and spa on site. Packed meals are provided for the many excursions that are the highlight of a stay at Remota.

The architecture is distinctly Chilean, blending the landscape and the building in a way that allows guests to enjoy scenic views from every nook and cranny. Architect German del Sol specializes in lodges in dramatic natural landscapes and the use of native materials, and his style is sometimes referred to as luxurious minimalism.

No matter what the style is called, Remota is a great base for exploring this part of Patagonia.

Experience the best Patagonia has to offer - 5/20/2014
    By: from Southern VT

Our stay at Remota was the highlight of our family vacation in Patagonia. We arrived early morning (early for Chile, anyway) and were led to the dining room for a consultation with Fernando, head of guides and excursions. In short order, a plan was set for a day of fishing for me and mountain bike trip and horseback ride for my wife and daughter. After glorious and productive day of fishing, including the biggest brown I’ve ever landed on a fly rod, my family met up for an incredible gourmet dinner where we swapped stories and viewed pictures of each other’s day of adventures. That first day felt like three vacation days in one, yet it turned out to be one of the most restful and restorative as well. It was pure vacation magic. Remota is a great way to experience the best Patagonia has to offer.

    World's Best Brown Trout Fishing? - 1/9/2014
By: from San Francisco, CA, USA

My wife and I spent a total of 6 days at Remota, with 3 full days of fly fishing with head guide, Fernando Cassanello. Fernando has developed a World-class fly fishing program that Remota should be immensely proud of. He has identified a diversity of fabulous locations near Puerto Natales, some on rarely fished private rivers and spring creeks, and all presenting different fly-fishing challenges. To top it all off, he knows the whereabouts of some of the biggest, most beautiful brown trout in all of Patagonia, and he knows what flies will entice them! We have fished with many guides over the years, but this experience was far and away the best we have ever had. Fernando's dedication and infectious enthusiasm for the wonderful brown trout of Patagonia will guarantee the best fly fishing experience of your life. We're already planning our next trip!

    Remota - 7/16/2013
    By: from California

We spent a week at Remota over Christmas with their Fly Fishing Program and it was an outstanding experience. 5-Star fun. Fernando and his crew were a complete delight. Professional and fun. Fernando knew exactly where to take us each day to maximize the best fishing and sites. Lots of fish everyday as well as being the perfect tour guides on the hours we spent sight-seeing. The crew spent their Christmas Day with us laying out a wonderful meal at Torres del Paines. So beautiful. The food everyday in the hotel for breakfast and dinner was superb. The wait staff - perfect. The on-the-road lunch spreads were incredible. Salads, BBQ's, Pisco Sours, and on and on. We will definitely go back.

    Best Experience Ever - 4/1/2013
By: from Kansas City, MO, USA

I would highly recommend Fernando and his team from Remota. We had the best 3-1/2 days of fishing. Everything from Sea run browns to Spring fed creek fishing. The size and quantity of fish we caught was incredible. The hotel Remota was 5 stars on food and lodging.
