Simon's HoverCrab

Keep your fly in the feeding zone when fly fishing for saltwater species.

Details

The most deadly, imitative crab flies available. This saltwater fly suspends in the perfect feeding zone, unlike other crab patterns that sink rapidly into the weeds where fish can't see them. The fly can also be fished as a surface-swimming crab. Perfect for fly fishing bonefish, tarpon, and permit everywhere and other crab-feeding saltwater species, such as stripers and redfish.

    The "Money" Fly - 6/12/2014
    By: from Charleston, SC

When I first saw the Hover Crab on the Orvis website, I began to drool. Every redfish that I saw would be caught, or so I thought. Great fly, well constructed, and very realistic. I tried them out yesterday evening on some tailing reds, with no luck. Each and every fish swam right by the fly. I'm not blaming the fly at all, it just wasn't on the menu last night. I tried a few other crab patterns, and a spoon fly, with the same results. They were just picky last night! I will definitely buy more Hover Crabs when the need arises, and hopefully that will be soon!

This crab fly looks like the real thing. Feeding saltwater fish will attack it without question. Good weight so that it will sink but not heavy to sink unnaturally. Put this in your box, then put in in the water. You won't go home empty handed.

Worked as expected. Attracted fish, kept it's point and was easy to throw.

    Simon Hover Crab - 1/22/2014
    By: from Cleveland, Ohio

I purchased these primarily due to reputation as a killer fly for Permit. I was amazed at the quality of them. They were far more than I expected. I tie a lot of my own flies and these are a quality job. 2 things you do not want in a fly. 1) one the fish ignore 2) one that is destroyed by the 1st fish These pass those tests. The best comment I can offer is my wife's, "Geez they look like real little crabs." The fish seem to agree.

    Cute But Effective - 8/26/2013

This little crab is deceiving in size but very effective. Great for fishing bottom feeders which includes many types of fish. Having more size options would be good.

A fly you must try in saltwater! - 5/13/2008
    By:

This is an incredible fly both in the tropics for bonefish and permit but also for striped bass along the atlantic sea coast. I've had several tremendous days sight fishing to striped bass at Monomoy on this fly. Fishing it with a drop weight or small split shot anywhere from 6" to 18" up from the fly is important. The fly will rise up from the bottom and stay weed free. This is one to try! My only complaint is that they tear up quickly, but that is a very good problem to have. If you desire an olive crab simply use a pantone marker to change the overall shade of the fly.
