Good, but expected more from Orvis -

I bought this as a Christmas present to myself. My first surprise was that the cradle was not cedar as represented., rather it is yellow poplar, I think, and certainly not as handsome as cedar. Not a big deal, but, as I said, I expected more from Orvis. Secondly, there were no instructions or labeling to determine which stone was fine, medium, and coarse. I called Orvis about this and the CSR said someone would call me within 24 hrs, which Jerry did. He said the proper order is from dark (solid gray) to mottled gray, to white (coarse to fine). I have spent an hour or two on six or seven knives (some with no edge at all), but I have yet to get any of them to really shave my arm hair. So, as Jerry said, it does take some practice and experimentation.to get a really keen edge.
Great Idea -
My kitchen knives have never been sharper, as Orvis has supplied a product that both effective and elegant enough to be stored in the kitchen, rather than the shop.
For the knife's amateur -

Hi, I have a collection of folding knives (around 150) from the simple swiss army knife to the sophisticated Laguiole or Thiers. Their price varies from 9$ to 500$. I made a show case where they can be displayed. I bought this sharpening set several years ago from Orvis. Now not only do I have beautiful knives but they also are sharpened like a razor blade.
Best yet -

I have bought a few knife sharpeners over the years, and this is my favorite! Takes time to learn the correct angle, but after that you will love the edge you get. The design stops it from moving around your table!
Needs Clarity -
The set didn't come with instructions on which stones were coarsest to smoothest & it took a while to get an answer, which was: Black, Grey, White. Also, the grey stone had a rough spot in the middle, which probably isn't a sharpening aid.
very good product -

First time to order from Orvis. Easy site to operate, products not found other places, and makes it very easy to return if any problem. Would most certainly order from again.
Great Purchase -

Overall a great product. Larger than expected which will work well to sharpen all lengths of knives. Pleased with purchase. Would recommend.
The Best -
I currently own a number of knife sharpening "tools" including electric machines, stones, etc. By far this sharpening set out performs all of them whether sharpening kitchen knives, pocket knives, butchering knives or pruning tools. Learn the proper technique and there will be no regrets.
