Robinson's Chicken Hawk

This egg-sucking-nymph pattern is a top fly for Great Lakes steelhead.

Details

Ohio-based Orvis-Endorsed Guide Patrick Robinson lives in the heart of Steelhead Alley, and chases those Great Lakes fish in tributaries around the region. His Chicken Hawk fly is essentially a smaller version of the Chicken Little, and fishes best in low, clear water, or when the trout and steelhead have faced heavy fishing pressure. Let it dead drift, or swing it through a run, and catch fish when everyone else comes up empty handed. In tan, orange, chartreuse, purple.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Chicken Hawk-- Soars Above the Rest! I had the chance to fish with Patrick at the end of September. Before we ended the day he gave me a "Chicken Little" and mentioned some of his designs could be found at Orvis. Before taking my next trip to Erie I decided to stock up on some steelhead patterns and came across the "Chicken Hawk". I honestly bought it because I saw Patrick's name there but this thing is dynamite! The "Chicken Hawk" was enticing hits when everything else I was trying failed. I'm not sure if it was the bright colors or what but it was working! I won't leave for another steelhead trip without making sure I have a couple "Chicken Hawks" in my fly box. Partick did a great job with this one!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Clear water steel Another one of those must have steelhead patterns. It seems like I get to fish for steelhead more when the water is low and the fish have been pressured hard than when they are fresh. When the water is low and crystal clear and your site fishing already spawned drop backs or staging fish one or two of these on the leader never lets down. The rust is my most productive, but sometimes something different gets some looks. Another simple yet very productive pattern from the Erie/steelhead Alley region!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Immediate I ordered 6 of the Chicken Hawks and got immediate results of two nice rainbows. They also work great on panfish with a light set-up.
