Viyella

The expert's pick for cool weather

Button up shirts dressy enough for business, practical enough for everyday.Orvis Senior Menswear Merchandising Manager Mark Templeton says autumn is the perfect season for Viyella. Since 1784, Viyella fabrics have been favored for their luxurious softness and sturdy weave. Lately, Mark has been working closely with Viyella designers to create Orvis-exclusive Viyella pieces featuring custom blends of cotton and wool.

Mark explains, “A supersoft weave of pure, long-staple cotton for breathability and color saturation, and fine merino wool for softness and durability, Viyella is one of the only fabrics that offers this measure of luxury and warmth.”

The History of Viyella: a Durable, Comfortable Fabric

The evolution of Viyella’s master blend of cotton and wool began more than 220 years ago in Nottingham, England. By the late 19th century, the combination had been perfected: an ideal marriage of breathable, long-staple cotton fibers and soft merino wool, intimately blended during the spinning process, then twill woven into a soft, warm, and lightweight cloth that resists shrinking and holds color remarkably well. Viyella quickly rose to be the most sought-after fabric of its time, legendary for its durability, its luxurious softness, and its remarkable ability to improve with age. And Viyella became the first registered and trademarked branded fabric in 1907!

By the mid-1900s, Viyella fabrics had become popular for babies’ gowns and children’s clothing, with a firmly established reputation for sensible, warm garments. During the World War II, British officers (who bought their own uniforms) began favoring Viyella shirts and the fabric became legendary for its exceptional durability, outstanding warmth, and superior softness. Through the ensuing decades Viyella’s distinction has endured as a sumptuously soft, durable, natural-fiber fabric, and is as renowned today as it was a century ago. Orvis is proud to include Viyella clothing as part of our distinctive country lifestyle range of apparel.

Sizing Information for Orvis Men's Clothing

Orvis clothes are cut generously to accommodate an active country lifestyle. We build plenty of “wearing ease” in all our garments to ensure you will enjoy them for many years. We field-test all of them on associates, and we take into consideration how the clothing will be worn. For example, when we fit outerwear, we always size it with the appropriate layers beneath. That means you do not need to order a size up for a comfortable fit.

Not sure what size to order? Just chat, e-mail, or call 888- 235-9763 our Customer Service experts. They will be happy to give you the actual garment measurements for any item we sell.

How to Measure

Men's SizingIn all instances, hold tape firm and level, but not tight.
a. Head: Using a flexible/soft tape measure, start 1" above the ear. Follow around head staying 1" above the ear. This will give your most accurate reading. Then refer to the chart for size.
b. Neck Circumference: Wrap tape around to the base of your front neck and allow room for wearing comfort. OR measure the collar length of a favorite shirt.
c. Sleeve Length: From the center back of your neck with your arm slightly bent, follow the tape around to your wrist bone.
d. Chest: Wrap a tape measure evenly around the fullest part under your arms.
e. Waist: Wrap tape around your natural waistline, or where you actually wear your pants.
f. Seat/Hip: Standing with your feet together, measure around the fullest part of your hip (approx. 7-8" below the waist). Don’t forget to keep the tape level.
g. Inseam: Best taken from an existing pair of pants you like. Measure along the garment inseam from the crotch seam to the hem.
h. Glove Hand: Measure all the way around the flat part of your hand, excluding the thumb, and around the widest part at the knuckles. Use the chart above to convert this measurement in inches to your corresponding glove size.
