true to size -

In response to the rather negative reviews of this jacket, I thought I should leave my own feedback just to set the record straight. The jacket fits me very well (I' m a size L) and is true to other Orvis jackets. Obviously it's double breasted, so the fit can only be determined when buttoned up. You don't wear a double breasted suit or jacket unbottoned. I've worn the jacket in miserable rainy and windy weather and was very satisfied with the protection it gave. Lift the collar up and wear a wool (cowboy) hat and you you'll look like the real deal even in the pouring rain..
Looked Good, But Not Too Usable -
I bought this when it went on sale. I liked the style, because it reminded me of the old fashioned canvas coats that were more common when I was a youngster. Unfortunately, the cleaning instructions make this coat impossible to wear anywhere but at cocktail parties! It actually says: "Do not wash; Do not tumble dry; Do not dry clean." This makes it almost unusable out in the woods or in the desert.
Inspired idea, but... -

This was an inspired idea, but I detect the hand of too many advisors - resulting in rather a mixed mess of style and material. This jacket just does not know what it wants to be - lightly treated outer shell, stocking-like collar, thin woodman wool lining that does not zip out, no waist cinch or belt to adjust it's boxy shape, neither legit western styling nor English trench utility. In the elements this jacket is destined to become a soppy, wrinkled mess. Back to the store, regretably.
