Best outdoor Kilimanjaro rug ever - 5/25/2013
    By: from Sewickley, PA

I initially purchased two rugs- one in red and one in sage for my newly added covered country front porch four years ago. They are stunning and look authentic! Both have held up to weather and traffic. I have received many compliments. They look exceptional with my wicker furniture. I am trying to order new fresh replacements but are on back order for six weeks. What a disappointment!

    disappointed - 5/2/2013

I received this rug today. I had actually gotten the water trapper rug before. I liked it but it is very difficult to clean up dirt with a vacuum because of the grooves. When I got this rug, I actually thought I was sent the wrong rug. This rug is not the deep red color as seen on the site. It looks like a very faded light red color. Plus it is not a solid weave color. The loom is faded red alternating with beige everywhere. It is very noticeable. It also looks like an Indian/aztec pattern, which I did not think it looked like in the picture. I will need to find another rug that looks better in color and style.

    Tough & good looking - 7/30/2012
    By: from Warren , Vermont

I am choosy and am pleased with the 7 rugs that I purchased, all this rug in different sizes. The color is a very mellow terra cotta color not bright, which works well in my traditional country house. They are well made. It does take a while for the rigs to lay flat. The service from Orvis was unbelievable! Two other sources for this rug told me they could not get these to me til September (I ordered in July) and Orvis somehow got these to me in less than a week. I really didn't think that they would pull it off. VBut they kept their word! I am a very satisfied customer.

    Dissappointed - 4/13/2012
    By: from Moreno Valley, ca.

The rug needs to be heavier for inside on a carpet - the edges tend to point upward and it moves around. I will probably have to get the item that goes under a rug to keep it from slipping.

This is the 2nd time I have ordered these rugs and they look great. The only complaint I have is that they send them rolled with the pattern facing up so when you unroll, the rug curls up and stays that way for a long time. I have tried turning it face down for a few days upon receipt to no avail. A simple change in the packing would be great!

    Good value - 6/6/2011
    By: from Washington state

I bought this rug as an interim floor covering in my living room, planning to switch it out when I find my 'true love' rug. It is going to be there awhile. I like it. I bought the sand colored version. It blends with my wood floor, it is subtle but the pattern is pleasing, My cats claw it and I don't worry (and I can see no damage; it really holds up!) When and if another rug wins my heart, I can move this one outside to my patio sitting area. Win, win!

    Great Rug - 6/3/2011
    By: from Peterborough, NH

We bought this rug because we have a Newfoundland puppy and live on a lake...not a good combo! It is so convenient to just hose it off and let it air dry. But just as important is the look. We had a party and everyone thought it was a real Kilim. We are actually thinking of getting a few more in various colors!

    Indestructible & Pretty - 5/5/2011

Great addition to my sunroom (aka my cats' wildlife watching room) and family gathering place. Outdoor rugs are indestructible, but every couple of years I like to change patterns and colors when I change chair cushions. These rugs truly are easy to clean, keep their color, and stand up to the casual abuse of dogs and cats who think I'm cleaning for them, not because of them (!). One big happy family.

    great rug - 10/8/2010

With a Golden Retriever in the house...this rug is great! The rug shows no wear, stands up to granchildren spilling drinks, crumbs, and everything else. Best of all, if I can't get around to running the vacuum cleaner, it looks as if I did! That alone sells it for me.

Care

How to Care for Your Orvis Rug

With proper maintenance, your Orvis rug will provide you with years of comfort and beauty. Regular care and cleaning will keep it looking and performing at its best, while protecting your investment. Regular cleaning actually lengthens the life of your carpets, and makes your home environment more enjoyable and healthful.

General Tips Spot Removal Water Trapper Mats Indoor/Outdoor Rugs

General cleaning tips for wool and cotton hooked, braided or woven rugs

The safest, most effective cleaning of any rug should be done by a professional service using a steam extraction method. How often you steam-clean a rug depends on the traffic the rug receives. Vacuum regularly and clean spills immediately by blotting with a clean cloth or sponge.

  • Reversible rugs (especially braided rugs) should be flipped often and cleaned when both sides are dirty.
  • Latex-backed rugs (this includes most hand-hooked rugs) cannot be cleaned with any petroleum-based solvents. These solvents break down the latex backing, causing the pile to become loose and the rug to lose its shape.
  • Smaller cotton rugs can be washed in a commercial-size washing machine (commercial machines offer a bigger tub to agitate and thoroughly rinse, plus are designed to handle the weight of a water-soaked rug during the spin cycle.)
  • Wool area rugs can be sent out to a professional dry cleaner for regular cleaning. It’s a good idea to call your dry cleaner and ask if they are equipped to handle rugs before bringing them in.

Spot removal

Removal of spots and spills is the most important way you can maintain your carpets and rugs. Responding quickly when anything is dropped or spilled can save the day...and your carpet!

Should a spill occur...

  • Immediately blot up liquids (do not rub!) with white towels or absorbent cloths; use the end of a knife or a spoon to scrape up solids.
  • Use the instruction chart below to treat the spot using the most effective treatment.
  • Always apply spot remover to a clean towel or cloth, never directly on the spot. Using small quantities at a time, work inwards from the edge of the spill to prevent it from spreading. Do not rub—this causes the spot to spread and can destroy or distort the pile. Do not soak the carpet with solution.
  • Continue to blot with clean towels until as dry as possible.

Find the source of the spot in the first column and use the corresponding methods for spot removal. If you have doubts about the spot, or how to remove it, contact a professional carpet cleaner.

Orvis Water Trapper Mats

Our Water Trapper mats work hard to keep your home, car, and garage clean and dry. Whether you use a Water Trapper under your dog's feeding station or outside on the porch, the tough, durable polypropylene fibers protect your floors and carpets by keeping dirt at the door.

To keep your Water Trapper looking fresh, simply hose it off to clean and hang it to dry in a ventilated area. It can be scrubbed with detergent if necessary and rinsed off to remove stuck-on mud, dirt, and pet food. If your Water Trapper is used in an uncovered outdoor area and is subject to heavy rain or morning dew, the mat should be allowed to dry both front and back to avoid any discoloration of the surface below.

Orvis Easy-Care AnySeason™ Indoor/Outdoor Rugs

Our newest collection of easy-care rugs effortlessly take on whatever your household dishes out, staying clean and good-looking in high-traffic areas, during mud season, and throughout a whole summer spent outdoors. Made of sturdy yet soft polypropylene, our high-performance rugs are:

  • Machine washable in smaller sizes
  • Quick drying
  • Mold- and mildew-resistant, they can be scrubbed with detergent and hosed clean
  • Able to be cleaned with bleach for difficult spills and stains

A few tips to make your indoor/outdoor rug last even longer.

  • If your rug is in an uncovered outdoor area and is subject to heavy rain or morning dew, it should be allowed to dry both front and back. Unchecked dampness will eventually cause the fiber to begin breaking down.
  • Surface smudges and grime should be sponged clean regularly using a mild detergent and warm water. Rinse with cold water and allow to dry thoroughly both front and back.
  • While these rugs are UV-treated to resist fading, nothing is completely immune to the sun’s rays. When not is use for extended periods, roll the dry rug and keep in a covered shaded area.

Size Chart

Rug Size Guidelines for Rooms

The right size rug makes all the difference...

If you're unfamiliar with sizing conventions for area rugs, then picking the right size rug for a room in your home can be confusing. The following guidelines will make it easier for you to pick the perfect size rug for your living room, dining room, bathroom, or smaller entry way.

Dining Rooms Living Rooms

An area rug should be 3 to 4 feet larger in length and width to the dining room table to prevent your guest's chairs from falling off the edge of the rug. In most cases, an 8' x 11' is the minimum size required.

Depending on the size of the room and the desired look, a 5' x 8' or 8' x 11' is usually perfect for living rooms.

Room-Size Rugs Entry-ways, Kitchens, & Bathrooms

If you want the rug to be more visible in all parts of the room with a border of hard surface flooring beneath, consider a 10' x 13'.

These usually require scatter-size rugs, 2' x 3' or even up to 4' x 6'. In many cases, these areas are a great place to showcase a special shape, such as a round rug.
