Steinbock Walker Jacket

This wool Walker jacket for men is ideal for those who love the outdoors.

The term “Walker” can be traced to the 9th century, when it was used to describe a person who spent a lot of time outdoors in nature. In the days before woven fabrics, artisans knitted very large coats and boiled them until they shrank, becoming more dense and durable in the process. This method, creating what we now call “boiled wool,” is still practiced in the Dolomite Mountains between Austria and Italy. The tightly packed wool fibers retain heat better, yet breath well in warmer weather. This boiled wool jacket and vest, descendants of the region's traditional garb, features real horn buttons and corduroy-microvelvet trimming. In loden. Shell: Pure virgin wool. Dry clean. Imported.
Regular even sizes: 44.

    A fine winter jacket! - 11/23/2014

I have had this coat for two winters and it always gets compliments. The boiled wool in this jacket is very warm and with very old world styling. The attention to detail is evident and appreciated.

Unsure of material, Pyramid cut - 1/8/2013
    By: from Rochester, MA

I was excited to see this jacket and ordered one in my size (40) as well as the Stienbock sport coat. The sport coat fit, but the walker jacket was at least two sizes larger, though labeled a 40. I returned it for a 38, which now fits on the shoulders, but could house a giant gut below. I call this a Pyramid Cut. This is supposed to be a "Walker's" jacket, not a couch potato jacket. If you're fit, you won't like the fit of this coat. The web page says that the material the coat is made of is "boiled wool", and Pure Virgin Wool. However, in the box with the jacket was a card saying that the coat is made of Cotton/Elastine. Yes, the card belongs with the jacket as it references the product name and number in the text. Are they kidding? I'm looking at the web page as I write this and it says Wool. Orvis had time to print up a card to stick in the box, but not the time to update the description? So, if you want a jacket made of some kind of cotton that fits like a pyramid, this is the one for you. Otherwise, choose another product. Mine is going back and now I'm out two shipping charges for the privilege of learning the truth about this product. I hope the review saves you the trouble.

    Awesome Coat - 3/11/2012
    By: from Medina, NY

I have been an Orvis customer for many years and have several find Orvis jackets and coats and by far this is my favorite addition. It is smart and functional. I purchased a 48 and have room to wear over an Irish wool turtleneck sweater. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys brisk walks on a cold snowy or crisp morning! Excellent find!

    excellent product - 12/30/2011

The Steinbock Walker is an excellent jacket. It is fully lined and warm enough for wearing outdoors in cool weather, but comfortable for indoor use as well. It fits well, although the sleeves on mine are a little long for the size (46). It is well constructed, and cut differently from other Trachten pieces I have accumulated over the years.
