The water surrounding the boat is as blue as the rod in your hands. How deep it is, you have no idea. A warm tropical wind races through the air, spreading around the crisp scent of the sea. Your fly looks like a dashboard hula dancer, a fluorescent wig tied to a hook the size of your palm. Primal beasts rise from the depths, slashing at the offering with pure anger, not an ounce of hesitation coursing through their muscles. A sailfish latches onto your fly, and with the high-pitched scream of your reel as a soundtrack, leaps to the sun in blue and gold flashes, its eyes focused on you. He's your Goliath. The 8'6", 14-weight Helios 2 is your slingshot. Proudly made in Manchester, Vermont.

Big Game Tamer -
By: BuffaloSoldier from Boulder/Denver, CO
Sunrise Anglers had the pleasure of using this lion tamer on 3 trips to Cabo San Lucas this past year(2013) My confidence in this rod grew after each subsequent fish that was brought to the boat. I wanted to relate how easily this rod casts. Most rods in this category of big game sacrifice the touch needed to deliver a fly at distances over 80 feet. This rod not only delivers the fly but is able to quickly pick up a mistake and reload in one effortless stroke. Once hooked up, lighter leaders are protected by a forgiving tip and battles are won by a stiff backbone through the lower rod sections. It takes a while for me to warm up to a new rod, but this one had me after fish one. Gorgeous blue and meticulous wrap work are combined with the black Mirage VII reels for the total package. These rods accompany each client on our trips in Cabo. You just never know what will show up and I don't like to have them under gunned. The casual saltwater angler can appreciate the weight of this rod which allows them to cast all day and still pick up a cold one after days end. Thumbs up Orvis!!!
Great stick -
By: BluewaterBill from Virginia Beach
The waters off Virginia Beach hold some of the most remarkable, but least known bill fishing in the world -- especially among fly rodders. Yesterday, I was fortunate enough to put the new Helios 2 14-weight to the test on these fish-rich waters. Outfitted with the Mirage VII and the Hydros WF14 line, the rod performed like a beast! We raised 13 White Marlin, and teased 9 within casting range. Of these, I hooked 6 and boated 2. All fish were in the 50 - 70 range, including the two fish landed, which were both estimated by the Captain at 60 - 65 lbs. The remarkable thing about the Helios 2 14-wt is its ability to actually load and cast (something unique among fly rods designed for leviathans of the deep) -- even as it has tremendous lifting ability. As a result of these two important attributes, I was able to quickly and accurately place heavy, wet, 12"-long billfish flies 50' astern when it was time to present -- AND!! -- when it was time for battle, the rod had all the backbone it needed to put the screws to these ridiculously strong fish. Both of the fish we landed were boated in under 20 minutes. (A good thing for both fish AND angler!) In 1979, I bought my first Orvis rod -- a 7-1/2' Brook Trout. In the mid-'90s, I was a guide at an Orvis Endorsed Outfitter in Michigan and guided Salmon, Steelhead and trout 150 days a year. Over those and the decades since, I've fished many, many Orvis rods and reels. From this perspective, its incredibly exciting to see you producing the finest line-up of rods and reels you've ever brought to market. Great, great job!!! Keep on pushing!!!
